“Superfood” is a big buzz word. The articles will say that apples are a superfood, or chia seeds, or something obscure like goji or acai berries. Are these healthy foods? Yes. But I define a superfood as a food with a dense nutrient density. Interestingly, they are the exact foods called sacred by the traditional cultures that Dr. Price studied. Fermented Cod Liver Oil Per 218 g of cod liver oil, there is 100000 IU of vitamin A and 10000 IU of vitamin D. FCLO is a food that people used to take all the time. It is rich in the omega 3 fats EPA and DHA. You can buy it here. Most fish oils are useless. But FCLO from Green Pastures is never heat treated (a common problem today). It was widely used as a healing food in the past. But despite the fact that it is one of the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet,…
Top 10 GM Foods
1. Soy 2. Corn 3. Canola 4. Sugar Beets 5. Dairy from CAFO cows 6. Zucchini and summer squash 7. Cotton 8. Alfalfa 9. Papaya 10. Aspartame Genetically modified foods are dangerous, and they sure as hell scare the crap out of me both from a health and environmental perspective. Not just due to the toxic effects, but the corporation behind genetic modification: Monsanto. Monsanto got its start in 1901 producing the artificial sweetener saccharin. Since then, Monsanto has developed and distributed numerous carcinogens including PCBs, DDT, Agent Orange and Roundup, all of which are now banned, excluding Roundup (though it should be). In 1994 Monsanto received approval for Posilac, a growth hormone for dairy cows (growth hormones in cows have been linked to cancer). Monsanto went on to create genetically modified seeds and are now the largest producer of GM seeds, cornering 90% of the market. Are GMOs Safe? I am…
Smoked Salmon Eggs Benedict with Dill Hollandaise (Paleo, Primal, GAPS, PHD)
I love eggs benedict. Anytime I go to brunch, which is kind of a lot because brunch is awesome, I always get eggs benedict without the English muffin. Unfortunately, it’s not very filling without the English muffin; so I always ask for a third egg…and extra hollandaise (love that shit). So I’m not only asking for a modified order with no muffin, I’m also asking for an extra egg and extra hollandaise sauce. Yes, I am that girl. I always apologize in advance for my complicated orders. I assumed EB was hard to make due to the hollandaise sauce. Turns out, it’s actually really easy. When you make it my way at least. I don’t know about other people but I imagine they’re less efficient. Hello, lover. An Unbiased Review of Herbalife
Read this holistic nutritionist’s Herbalife review and learn whether Herbalife products and shakes really help you with weight loss. Herbalife Review: This is what I, as a holistic nutritionist, think of Herbalife products for weight loss! While recently surfin’ Instagram I came across this hashtag: #herbalife. So I decided to check out their website and what Herbalife products were all about. It’s shocking. Are people consuming this stuff thinking they’re making a good move for their health and weight loss goals? People are selling this and calling it healthy? Disgusting. So here is my unbiased review of Herbalife products. Herbalife is a scam disguised as healthy living. According to their website, Our Mission is to change people’s lives by providing the best business opportunity in direct selling and the best nutrition and weight-management products in the world. Unfortunately, Herbalife by no means sell the best nutrition products – not even close.…
White Potato vs Sweet Potato and Are They Paleo?
I hate sweet potatoes, not because they are bad for you. It’s because I think they are disgusting. I always have. I am not into savory/sweet foods. Cinnamon on a potato? What the hell is that? Gross. I’ve also heard the paleo police cry, “White potatoes aren’t paleo!” Oh really? As if our ancestors came across the white variety of this starchy tuber and shouted, “Toss that shit! It ain’t sweet!” Not likely, pal. I used the USDA’s nutrition database to compare the nutrient density of the good ol’ white potato versus the sweet potato. The values are in grams, per 100g of each. As you can see, the sweet potato wins for calcium, vitamin C, and vitamin K; though not by much when it comes to vitamins C and K. The white potato reigns supreme for phosphorous, potassium and folate by a pretty decent margin. If you use the USDA links I…
My 25th Birthday
I turned 25 this past weekend. Scott had been planning a birthday surprise, which turned out to be a stay at the very fancy Had Adams hotel and dinner at the first all organic restaurant, Nora. The hotel was amazing, as was the dinner. I had the grass-fed NY strip and cauliflower puree, but unfortunately it was too dark for pictures. Here are some from the weekend. Scott stripped down and got into this robe within five minutes of our arrival. They sent up free cake! I tried a few bites. The weekend ended with an insanely expensive omelet delivered via room service (who knew they added 17 different charges just to deliver some eggs to your room?). It was an amazing weekend and I’m stoked for 25!
Paleo Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough
When I was in elementary school I sold tubs of cookie dough. Yes, I was that kid slangin’ treats around the neighborhood. I was all about that cookie dough. My best friend, Jenn and I couldn’t wait until I could finally sell the stuff. It meant that we could sit around and eat the dough out of the giant plastic tub. Looking back on it, it was pretty gross. But cookie dough is really, really good. I especially love mixing a lil’ bit of this in some plain, unsweetened, full-fat, grass-fed yogurt. It’s soo good. Best Guacamole Recipe…EVER
I’ve never had guacamole that I liked more than my own. Our hotel in Mexico came close, it was great. And this restaurant close to my ‘hood makes a pretty mean guac too, in case you’re ever in the area. They also make some awesome tacos. But I still like my own guac best. I plan on making it for the Super Bowl, along with baked sprouted corn chips a la The Coconut Mama. I know corn chips are not paleo or any of that, but I’m also not one of the super paleo purists that don’t enjoy baking my own corn chips for the Super Bowl. That’s not fun. Guacamole for 2 This is the best and easiest guacamole recipe ever! No fuss, no long list of ingredients – it’s perfect as it is! 1 ripe avocado1/2 to 1/4 onion (I like a lot of onion)2 tablespoons cilantro1 jalapenosea salt Dice the onion,…
Our Holbox Island Vacation
I’ve decided to start sharing more of my personal life on here. The first reason is that I’m really, really interesting (right?). The second is that I like it when other people share their lives and you get to see a into the life of the blogger. The third and most important is that it is just as important to have a fun, stress-fee, loving life as it is to eat healthy. Both are necessary to have a healthy body. You can eat all the over the top healthy food you want, but if your life sucks, your life sucks. And that will affect your health. Any negative emotion creates a stress response within our bodies. I want to share what I do with my life to hopefully inspire others to have more fun in theirs. While I want to help people on their real food journey and make the…
Kashi Vs an Egg
I’m just going to throw this out there: Kashi sucks. As a brand, as a product, as a health food, they suck. Lately, I’ve been seeing a lot of commercials in which Kashi is touted as an acceptable replacement for an egg, with the tagline “Kashi: as much protein as an egg!” Yeah, and as many processed ingredients as an Oreo. Get it together, Kashi. Kashi uses genetically modified “foods” including soy, canola, triticale (a sketchy hybrid grain produced by crossing wheat and rye), corn and other GMO products. By buying Kashi, you are supporting giant corporations that not only destroy the environment but also put small family farms out of business. By this I mean, you’re kind of a jerk if you buy Kashi. Soy protein concentrate is the third ingredient. Soy has a whole host of issues, including a high phytic acid content which blocks mineral absorption, it…
