Is Dairy Bad For You? Is It Paleo?

Just because something wasn’t eaten in the paleolithic era does not automatically make it unhealthy. Truth be told, a lot of us paleo peeps eat a lot of foods that were not eaten in the paleolithic era, though could have been reasonably obtained in smaller quantities, like almond flour, coconut milk, kelp noodles, etc. Just because it was not eaten during this time period is not a good enough reason to not consume dairy. Here are some common things I hear about dairy: We are the only animal to consume the milk of another animal. My response: We are the only animal to consume milk after infancy. We are also the only animal to drive and perform surgeries, should we stop doing that as well? But Isn’t Dairy Hard To Digest? Pasteurized dairy is indeed harder to digest. The pasteurization process destroys beneficial enzymes, bacteria and lactase. Lactase is the…

Scenes From My Weekend

This dude came home lookin’ super cute. And then we went to Dino. Dino is one of my favorite restaurants and sources local and organic ingredients, including grass-fed meats and wild seafood. I tried the duck with broccoli leaves. Duck is delicious. For brunch we went to Hank’s Oyster Bar. I automatically like any restaurant that sets out Old Bay on their tables. I had the smoked herring hash with poached eggs and hollandaise. It was amazing. After brunch we walked around, I got a bigger pot for my tomato plant, I saw this dude painting. In the afternoon I headed to a crab feast that one of my friends throws every summer. From L – R, kombucha (mine), spiced rum, purple drink, vodka, and in the center is a crab (also mine). Maryland, baby! I brought my own organic chardonnay. These are my friends! I love them. It was…

Lacto Fermented Garlic Aioli

I have something to share with you. Aioli is just a fancy word for flavored mayo. So garlic aioli = garlic-flavored mayonnaise. If you omitted the roasted garlic, this would just be mayo, and I love me some mayo. Unfortunately, most mayo is made using rancid vegetable oils that are high in inflammatory omega-6 fatty acids. Since I’m trying to avoid heart disease, obesity and cancer, I tend to avoid store-bought mayo. These are the ingredients in Hellman’s olive oil mayo: WATER, SOYBEAN OIL, OLIVE OIL, WHOLE EGGS AND EGG YOLKS, MODIFIED POTATO STARCH, VINEGAR, SALT, SUGAR, LEMON JUICE, SORBIC ACID AND CALCIUM DISODIUM EDTA (USED TO PROTECT QUALITY), NATURAL FLAVOR, PAPRIKA OLEORESIN GMOs, preservatives and sketchy ingredients. No thanks. It’s easier to just make my own and not inflame my insides. Lacto-Fermented Garlic Aioli An easy recipe for the best ever Roasted Garlic Aioli made in your food processor!…

Paleo-ish Cheddar Jalapeno Biscuits

Almost Paleo Cheddar Jalapeño Biscuits These Cheddar Jalapeno Biscuits are so easy to make and perfect for brunch and breakfast. I eat these with bacon, eggs, turkey, mayo, avocado, lettuce and tomato. I’ve even used them as the English muffin part of my eggs benny, which was awesome. 1 cup almond flourtwo pastured eggs1 cup cheddar (shredded (I used white cheddar but I actually don't prefer it))2 jalapenos (diced)1/4 teaspoon baking soda (aluminum free) Set oven to 350.Combine all ingredients and shape into muffins (above).Bake on parchment paper for 15 minutes, or until golden. I eat these with bacon, eggs, turkey, mayo, avocado, lettuce and tomato (but not all at the same time, although that would be good too). I’ve even used it as the English muffin part of my eggs benny, which was awesome.

Scallops Over Cauliflower Puree

I love serving these scallops over cauliflower puree! Some people also call it cauliflower mash. Call it whatever you want. Just steam cauliflower until soft, put it in the blender with a shit ton of butter, puree until smooth. Boom. I don’t usually buy scallops because they’re on the pricier side. But when I was in my local, organic grocery store, these were marked down because the day I was shopping also happened to be the “sell by” date for these babies. They were only $2.50! How awesome is that. Tomato Scallops on Cauliflower Puree Served on cauliflower puree these tomato-y pan-fried scallops make for the perfect low-carb lunch or appetizer! 6 sea scallops2 tbsp butter1 small tomato (I got mine from the farmers market, summer 'maters are too good)1 tbsp fresh parsley (chopped)1 garlic clove garlic (minced) Dice the tomato and saute in the butter.Add the scallops. Cook for…

Why Is The AHA Endorsing Subway?

Subway touts itself as a healthy fast food joint, with commercials of foot long sandwiches that are somehow healthy because they’re low-fat. Their slogan is “Eat Fresh.” Unfortunately there is nothing fresh or healthy about Subway. In fact, it’s just as unhealthy as Burger King or McDonald’s. So why then, is the American Heart Association endorsing Subway as healthy food? Well, because they get paid to. The AHA does not have the best interest of the American people in mind. Just like the FDA, the USDA and the American Dietetic Association, these organizations are corrupt. They do not operate from a position of safety, they operate to make money. According to USA Today, the AHA heartcheck costs $700,000 annually. That’s a lot of dough for the AHA; what does it matter if Americans are duped in the process? The AHA obviously does not keep up with modern nutrition, they still…

10 Ways To Prevent Cancer

Eat Organic and Local Eating organic foods that have been grown without cancer causing pesticides, fungicides and herbicides is the first step you can take when it comes to preventing cancer. Many studies have established a direct link between pesticides and leukemia, lymphoma, breast, liver, lung, brain, prostate and several other cancers. Eating organic food is more expensive, but it literally prevents cancer. I don’t know about you, but I’d rather avoid cancer, which costs more money in the long run than organic food. Eat Unprocessed Organic Foods Many people make the mistake of buying junk food just because it is organic. While it’s a step up from conventional junk food and it’s fine in moderation, do not make your diet the same old junk food just because it’s organic. Chips, sodas, diet bars, cookies, candies, crackers, etc should not replace unprocessed food in your diet just because it’s organic.…

Effective Grocery Shopping + Sample Grocery List

When people make the transition into eating healthier foods, they often get stuck on what to buy from the grocery store, how to plan meals, and how to effectively grocery shop. I cover all of this in Ditch The Diet, with an entire grocery shopping guide, but I figured I’d share my grocery list and how I plan for it. On Thursday or Friday of each week, I make a grocery list. I’m not hungry when I do this, otherwise my list would include approximately thirteen thousand items. I list my staple items like veggies and meats, then whatever else I want. I also list any meals I’d like to have, make for the blog, etc. My list is messy, random and not categorized. Basically it’s nothing like the way I list it in DTD. But here’s a sample: jalapeños cheddar ground beef skirt steak chicken salmon tomatoes frozen peppers…

Liver: The OG Multivitamin

Liver is the most nutritious food on earth. Today people often consider fruits and vegetables to be the most nutrient dense foods. And while they are nutrient dense and undoubtedly healthy, they are not as nutritious as animal fats, meats and seafood, particularly liver. This is something that traditional cultures were well aware of. I’ve written about the Neurs before, the tribe in Africa that grew to be extremely tall. They ate liver regularly, both raw and cooked. They considered it sacred, as many traditional cultures do. It is often reserved for parents planning on conceiving, pregnant women and growing children. Liver makes beautiful, healthy babies. It’s funny to me how intelligent and in touch with nature ancient cultures were, and how much we’ve forgotten, how we’ve become so disconnected from our food. Beef liver is a whole food, it has perfect proportions of vitamins and minerals. In addition to…
