Three Day Preconception Meal Plan

Yesterday, I found myself searching for meal plans that nutritionists, bloggers, medical organizations and doctors shared for pregnant women and women trying to become pregnant. For whatever reason, I love seeing meal plans and getting an idea of what others are eating. Unfortunately, for the most part the meal plans were pretty terrible. They recommended oatmeal instead of eggs because of the fat content (um yeah, the omega-3s along with choline and vitamins A, E, D and K are kind of the point of eating eggs during pregnancy!), low-fat dairy products and a ton of fiber from “healthy whole grains.” Overall, the plans were very low in fat which is exactly the food a woman needs for optimal fertility. In fact, a study from Harvard found that women who ate two or more servings of low-fat dairy per day had an 85% higher risk of infertility than women who ate…

The Surprisingly Unhealthiest Fast Food Restaurants

In doing research for this article, I found that these were some of the top “healthy fast food chains” simply because they offer low calorie options. Because it’s not 1979 and I actually know nutritional science, I’m calling bullshit on these chains. Low-calorie does not equate to healthy. In fact, if something is touted as low-calorie, you can almost guarantee it’s even more unhealthy. This is because low-calorie or low-fat options are usually loaded with chemicals like MSG and other “natural and artificial” flavors to enhance the taste. Food manufacturers also add sugar, artificial sweeteners and empty carbohydrates to these foods. When looking for healthy options, we need to stop looking at calories and fat content. We need to pay attention to the actual ingredients, which more often than not contain a ton of toxins, chemicals, GMOs, preservatives and all around horrible ingredients. Even though these chains are often considered healthy,…

Paleo Seafood Stew

This is definitely a fertility meal. Because Scott and I are planning on getting knocked up in the not so distant future, I’ve been trying to create more nutrient-dense meals. Seafood is obviously one of the most nutritious foods. The mussels especially, they contain several B vitamins, namely B12. They’re also rich in selenium and zinc – not to mention that they’re a great and environmentally sound protein source. Paleo Tomato & Herb Quiche

I kind of hate making breakfast. For the most part, I’m not hungry when I wake up (around 7 or 8) and work until I actually feel the need to eat (around 10 or 11). By that time, I don’t want to actually make breakfast, I kind of just want it to appear in front of me. Which is why I like making quiches or egg casseroles. Making a quiche at the beginning of the week allows me to just pop a piece in the oven on the toast setting for three minutes and be good to go. It makes my life easier and I like that. Plus, Paleo Tomato and Herb Quiche This paleo tomato and herb quiche is loaded with nutrients from the herbs, greens, eggs and tomatoes. 1 batch of paleo pie crust (see notes)1/2 cup milk of choice6 eggs2 tomatoes (sliced)1/2 cup basil1/4 cup dill1/4 cup…

Paleo Italian Turkey Meatballs

There’s an Italian restaurant in downtown Silver Spring that I love called Olazzo. I regularly go there after work to get a glass of wine and hit up some of their happy hour specials. One is meatball sliders. I obviously don’t eat bread so for me it’s just meatballs. It’s actually one of the only places I’ve ever had meatballs and they are SO GOOD. Unfortunately, whenever I’ve tried to make meatballs at home, they never come out as well. Until now. I’ve literally never cooked with ground turkey before but it may be my new go-to. The texture is unbelievable. While my ground beef meatballs were tough, thick and dry – these are soft and moist (literally the worst word ever but it’s fitting here). The flavor is awesome too. I don’t mean to go all Chris Traeger on you, but I thought the turkey tasted just as good…

How I Spend $100 A Week on 100% Organic Groceries For Two People

I recently asked people on my Facebook page how much they spend on groceries and shared that I spend around $100 for my husband and myself. I was surprised to find that people were surprised by this and tell me that they spent way more than that for two people on non-organic food. I also know that it’s possible to spend even less than this, like if we didn’t have to buy wild seafood for Scott (but he doesn’t eat chicken or beef or turkey). This also includes the extras we get, like organic wine, dark chocolate and smoked oysters (which make the best snack). To be honest, I actually used to spend a shit ton of money on groceries. I’d go in without an idea and grab whatever looked good. I didn’t check sales, and I normally went to Whole Foods (Whole Paycheck, anyone?) because it was the nearest…

Poached Eggs Over Prosciutto with Pesto

While I’m a big fan of spending time cooking dinner and drinking wine (it relaxes me!), I want my breakfast and lunch to be done in less than 10 minutes. I don’ t have time in the morning to make elaborate meals so the quicker the better. That makes poached eggs a great option. Also, if I’m eating breakfast, it’s usually because I woke up with ravenous hunger. It’s that or I’m not hungry at all so I fast. There’s no in between for me. So yesterday when I woke up ready to eat my cats, I had to think of a quick breakfast option. This fit the bill and was freaking delicious. I think it is what people affectionately refer to as “yolk porn.” Ingredients: 3 slices of prosciutto 2 tbsp pesto (I just blend basil, parsley, pine nuts, garlic and olive oil and keep it in the fridge)…

Paleo Breakfast Pizza with Tapioca Flour Pizza Crust

This paleo pizza crust with tapioca flour is the perfect canvas for all your favorite toppings. Try my version – a paleo breakfast pizza with pesto, prosciutto, and eggs. This delicious Paleo Breakfast Pizza comes with the best-ever gluten-free paleo pizza crust! Who doesn’t love a breakfast pizza? I guess I don’t if we’re talking typical pizza. I tend to avoid getting gluten hangovers before lunch. But this breakfast pizza is made from tapioca flour, which is a 100% safe starch! It’s easily digestible and provides good carbs to help keep you full. I don’t know about you, but I definitely feel fuller when my meal includes some carb action. Why tapioca flour is the best choice for making paleo pizza crust: Tapioca is a type of starch extract that’s derived from a vegetable called cassava root. Added in the right quantity, tapioca flour can add so much structure to baked…

Why Essential Oils Are ESSENTIAL For Your Health And Happiness

I think we can all agree that our current medical system is flawed. People are handed prescriptions instead of actually fixing their problems. I can’t tell you how many prescription drugs I’ve been prescribed, everything from Accutane to Xanax. I wish I had known that essential oils were not only more effective, but safer. 100 people die every day in the US from the overprescription of drugs, but what if these people were instead introduced to a healthy diet and essential oils? We need to start fostering the power of plants instead of toxic, dangerous prescription drugs. In the New York Times, neurosurgeon Sanjay Gupta said, According to a 1999 report by the Institute of Medicine, as many as 98,000 Americans were dying every year because of medical mistakes. Today, exact figures are hard to come by because states don’t abide by the same reporting guidelines…But a reasonable estimate is that…

How To Pack A Paleo Lunch

When I didn’t work from home, my coworkers would constantly ask how I managed to pack a healthy lunch every single day. It really doesn’t need to be complicated: a protein, a starch (read about why white rice is healthier than brown and is a paleo approved starch HERE), a veggie, a snack. Packing a healthy, paleo lunch is the easiest thing ever. AND IT SAVES A TON OF MONEY. Generally speaking, buying lunch everyday costs around $10, but packing your own 100% organic lunch is less than $5! The big problem with buying lunch is that you never really know the ingredients. When I didn’t work from home, occasionally I bought food from my favorite local lunch spot or from the cafeteria at work. I know the meat and vegetables were not organic, but even more than that, they likely used cheap, rancid vegetable oils, MSG, soy and wheat.…
