I love me some easy dinners. Every weekend I take a few hours to prep some food for the week. It makes life so much easier. Last weekend I chopped up some veggies and pork and marinated them. When I got home on Tuesday, I barely felt like moving, much less cooking. Thankfully, I skewered the veggies and pork, sliced some potatoes and threw them in the oven. One pan. Ready in under 45 minutes. Paleo Pork Kabobs Last weekend I chopped up some veggies and pork and marinated them. When I got home on Tuesday, I barely felt like moving, much less cooking. Simple Spicy Salad
Sometimes, I really crave a salad. I used to think it was really obnoxious when people said they craved salads. Or that people who ate salads constantly and loved them were obnoxious. But really, I was so restrictive with my food, that I never craved healthy food. I craved fat and sugar because I wasn’t feeding my body properly. Now that I eat an adequate amount of protein, healthy fats and safe starches, I seriously never crave junk food. I’m naturally drawn to healthy foods and it’s awesome. It’s literally not a problem to say no to candy or cake or cookies. If I want any of these, I make them for myself and I don’t restrict it. But I politely decline the wheat and GMO sugar beet filled desserts, not only because they make me feel like shit, but because I geniunely have no desire to eat them. So now…
Natural Beauty 101
The average woman uses up to 515 chemicals per day on her skin. FIVE HUNDRED AND FIFTEEN. Where’s the “natural beauty” in that? The skin absorbs whatever is applied to it. So even if you’re eating a mostly organic and local diet, if you use toxic body products you’re still ingesting chemicals. But this doesn’t take away from the fact that the first step to natural beauty is a healthy diet. I firmly believe that beauty is a direct result of health. Eating healthy fats, organic veggies and nutrient dense proteins will provide clear and hydrated skin, strong nails and great hair. Not only that, but diet directly influences mood. Happiness is hot, y’all. Here’s the good news: most organic, chemical-free makeup and body products are way cheaper than their toxic counterparts. Here is a list of some of my favorites, all of which are much more effective than the chemical laden…
In Defense of Maria Kang
Personally, I think Maria Kang’s picture and the caption is awesome. As someone who wants kids in the near future, I found it entirely motivating and inspiring. The reactions people are going to derive from this is largely based on their personal outlook, and thankfully mine is happy and secure. Unfortunately, there have been a few themes I’ve noticed in the responses to this seemingly normal wife and mother, and they’ve been harsh, and they’ve been presumptuous. The overwhelming reaction to the above picture seems overly sensitive to me, and I can’t help but wonder if it’s due to peoples’ insecurities. Or is the overall response indicative of the mindset people hold toward health, obesity and personal accountability in this country? We need to take ownership of our bodies. If you choose to be overweight, that is your choice. I don’t hate you for it, I don’t think you’re less of…
Vanilla Pie With Caramel Pecan Topping
I like pie. But honestly, I don’t love fruit pies. Apple pie? Pass. Cherry pie? Gross. I’m just not into them. I do like chocolate pie. And vanilla pie. And I freaking love caramel. So this little baby pie was born. And it ended up being really good, mostly raw, and totally vegan. Which is surprising, because making a vegan pie was not at all my intention. Also if you consider honey an animal food, I guess it’s not vegan. But you could sub maple syrup. Paleo Caramel Sauce
When I was a kid I loved caramel. I would get caramel apples and just lick the caramel off because I’m weird like that. I couldn’t be bothered with the boring and only nutritious component of the apple. One time I tried to get my brother to eat the apple after I licked all the caramel off (because I’m gross like that). But instead of grossing you out, I want to get you psyched on this awesome caramel recipe. It’s dairy-free and sweetened with raw, local honey. It’s super simple and only requires you to stir it around a bit. Paleo Caramel Sauce This Paleo Caramel Sauce is dairy-free and sweetened with raw, local honey. The Healthy Holidays Challenge
Every holiday season when I hear about people gaining weight I always think of the episode of Friends where Joey and Ross are dangling from the fire escape and Joey asks Ross how much he weighs. But here’s the thing: you don’t need to eat terribly, gain weight, or deprive yourself of awesome holiday food. I used to do one of two things every holiday season. Scenario 1: Convince myself that eating terribly was fine, that the holidays were an exception and that I’d be missing out if I didn’t indulge. I’d gain weight, break out, and feel terrible. Scenario 2: Convince myself that eating all of my favorite, delicious holiday treats wasn’t worth it so I’d miss out and be completely miserable. But it doesn’t have to be one or the other. You can have your pumpkin pie and eat it too. In the Healthy Holiday Challenge I’m sending you…
Roasted Salmon & Asparagus with Easy Cayenne Hollandaise
When I was younger my favorite breakfast was egg benedict (wait, it still is). Of course, I could only get it at restaurants, which means I probably had it all of two times as a kid, but I remember always being intimidated by hollandaise sauce. It was so fancy, and so French. How could anyone possibly recreate that creamy, delicious sauce? My grandmother couldn’t, none of my friends’ moms ever made hollandaise. I was pretty sure you had to be a classically trained (probably French) chef to do it. Turns out, it’s actually really easy. Especially if you have a food processor. The great part about this meal is that while I was making the hollandaise, I had salmon and asparagus roasting in the oven. I simply turned the oven to 400, and immediately added a piece of salmon and one bunch of asparagus. Let it cook for 15 minutes. You have a…
Are Burger King’s New “Satisfries” Actually Healthier?
Burger King has come out with a new fry recipe called Satisfries. It’s supposed to be healthier than the McDonald’s fries. They contain 40% less fat and 30% fewer calories. Is it actually better? No. The ingredients in the Satisfries are: Potatoes vegetable oil (contains one or more of these oils: canola, soybean, cottonseed, sunflower, corn) tapioca starch modified corn starch-modified paprika extract (color) rice flour salt sodium acid pyrophosphate (to maintain natural color) turmeric extract (color) xantham gum Now compare them to the regular fries: Not too different, huh? Not only do the Satisfries contain GMOs, they are deep fried in vegetable oils. These oils are extremely inflammatory. This means they wreak havoc on the body. They are very high in omega-6 fatty acids and very low in omega-3 fatty acids. Even small amounts of this oil distort omega 3 to 6 balance that is necessary to maintain a healthy body…
Fish Taco Salad
I recently wrote about my love for Mexican food, and for fish tacos in particular. It’s a strong love. After making such an amazing tasting Mexican slaw, I realized that fish would be perfect on top. I don’t eat tortillas anyway, so fish taco salad would be amazing. Plus I had leftover Mexican slaw.
