I looove BLTs. I also love mayo. I know some people hate mayo, and I tend to agree when it’s that gross mayo made with GMO vegetable oils. But homemade mayo is where it’s at. It’s got all that creaminess and is rich in fat soluble vitamins (A, E, D and K – plus choline which is great if you’re preggo). I can’t take credit for making the wrap, but since I bought (eight packages) of them, I’ve fallen in love. They’re made with super healthy ingredients (click the link below to see) and don’t fall apart like other paleo wraps I’ve tried. Paleo BLT Wraps These are hands down the best paleo wraps out there – filled with pastured bacon, homemade mayonnaise and tomatoes! The perfect office lunch! 1 pure wrap (see notes)1 tbsp homemade mayo1-2 pieces pastured bacon3 tomato slices (small)iceberg lettuce Make the mayo. It’s actually incredibly easy…
Spinach, Apple, Blue Cheese & Turkey Salad
This was one of the things I made with the approximate 7,475 pounds of leftover turkey I have from Thanksgiving. It was simple, crisp, healthy and tasted really good. What more do you need in a salad? I’m honestly usually not the biggest fan of salads. I’m not the best at making them. I like when you go to a restaurant and the salads are huge with all these cool ingredients and topped with a tasty protein. I know most people shy away from salads because they’re boring and don’t taste that interesting, but this has all ya need. Greens, sweetness from the apple, creaminess from the cheese, crunchiness from the walnuts and all topped with turkey (protein) and olive oil (fat) to keep you full. Check out the recipe: Spinach, Apple, Blue Cheese & Turkey Salad This easy and healthy salad is a great way to use up leftover…
Why You Should Remove (And Avoid) Mercury Fillings
When I first started dating Scott, within a couple of months I made him get his mercury fillings removed. I don’t like to say I “made him” as much as I strongly suggested and used my overwhelming charm to force him to comply. Generally speaking, I’m a very cool girlfriend (now wife) but there are some things I just don’t play around with. Drugs, cheating, and MERCURY FILLINGS. Yes, I put them all in the same category. According the the FDA, amalgam fillings are a safe option that also happen to be the cheapest. They’re approved for safety and recommended because they don’t break as easily as other fillings. The FDA also says, Dental amalgam contains elemental mercury. It releases low levels of mercury vapor that can be inhaled. High levels of mercury vapor exposure are associated with adverse effects in the brain and the kidneys. FDA has reviewed the…
Paleo Honey Sesame Chicken
I looove Chinese food. I grew up eating it; my best friend, Jennifer’s mom would it order it weekly for us. That was back in my days of eating white bread topped with margarine topped with sugar. That’s not a joke. I actually used to do that. No wonder why I had such severe acne as a kid. These days, I don’t eat Chinese food, ever. Eat it at a restaurant or order it, that is. This is for two reasons. One, it DESTROYS my stomach. I have a weak stomach. Filling it with MSG, vegetable oils, high fructose corn syrup and who knows what else is not only unhealthy, it physically hurts me. The other reason is because once I was reading about these college kids who collected leftover food from restaurants to make compost for their plants. They found that without fail, every time they used leftover Chinese…
Paleo Leek, Mushroom and Grape Tomato Risotto
Risotto is such a rich, decadent food. I mean, super creamy rice – what’s not to love? Well, I don’t love eating a giant bowl of rice. Don’t get me wrong, I eat white rice from time to time, especially if I’ve worked out that day. But a healthier option is definitely subbing cauliflower for the rice. And it actually tastes pretty amazing. Paleo Leek, Mushroom and Grape Tomato Risotto Paleo Leek, Mushroom and Tomato Cauliflower Risotto This is the perfect easy low-carb alternative to regular risotto! Loaded with healthy mushrooms, leeks and tomatoes and made extra creamy through the addition of coconut cream. 4 cups cauliflower (riced (using food processor or grater))4 large mushrooms (sliced)1 leek (sliced)3/4 cup grape tomatoes (halved)2 tbsp butter1/2 cup raw & grass-fed cream or coconut cream (the thick part at the top)salt and pepper Melt the butter over medium to medium-high heat. FREE Seven Day Detox Challenge
Listen, I know “detox” is a buzz word and if it annoys you – it probably annoys me more. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard women talk about doing a detox or a “cleanse.” Don’t get me wrong, I have no problem with detoxes. In fact, I love ’em. What I don’t love is the way most people go about detoxes. The water fasts. The juice fasts. The only-raw-veggie detox. The way most people basically go on starvation diets to “detox” their bodies. Yeah, that’s not really a detox. That’s just starving yourself and it ain’t a good idea. It can cause a hell of a lot of undesirable side effects. So know that when I say detox, that is NOT what I’m talking about. Especially for this challenge. This challenge is easy, convenient and you don’t need ANYTHING to do it. Detoxing is more about what…
Mercury & Heavy Metal Detox Smoothie
So recently, you may have read about the dumbest thing I’ve done to my health. Then you may have read about how I’m detoxing from mercury. Well, while I was at the dentist, the doc also tested me for other toxins in my system and found that I’m harboring lead and aluminum in addition to mercury. Not so great, especially considering that we’re planning on getting knocked up next year. When I began this detox journey, I was taking a lot of pills, a lot of teaspoons of this and scoops of that. It was getting difficult to remember to take each supplement every day, which is why I came up with this smoothie. It doesn’t taste bad (though honestly, it’s not the most delicious thing I’ve ever eaten either). The chlorella and bentonite are extremely effective at removing mercury, heavy metals, and other toxins. If you really want to…
Paleo Leftover Turkey Salad Recipe – Sweet & Spicy
An easy and healthy paleo turkey salad recipe great for using up leftover turkey meat from Thanksgiving! Ideal for meal prepping. When life gives you leftover turkey – make this easy paleo turkey salad recipe! So. I have a giant, barely touched turkey in my fridge. Our Thanksgiving dinner consisted of five people, only three of which actually ate turkey. We bought a thirteen pound bird. That’s over four pounds per person. So to say I have a lot of leftover turkey on my hands is a bit of an understatement. I basically have an entire bird to eat myself because Scott doesn’t eat turkey. I am dying to make bone broth out of the carcass though so I have to come up with easy and healthy recipes to use the actual turkey meat on it. I recently went to a girlfriend’s baby shower and her mom made really good…
Is Fit The New Fat?
By acknowledging that fit shaming exists, I’m not denying that fat shaming doesn’t. It does. Especially on the internet. People can really be assholes when they’re protected behind a computer screen. It’s mean, it’s cowardly, it’s disgusting. I do not condone shaming someone or something. Hell, I don’t even use the word slut. But there is no denying that fit shaming exists as well. Especially when people of average weight are now the minority. 69% of Americans over the age of 20 are overweight. The biggest place I have personally seen fit shaming (in my own experience and among my friends) is in the workplace; whereas the most common place I have seen fat shaming is on the internet. This will likely differ for everyone. I entered the grown-up workforce when I was 20 years-old (i.e.: an office job with the government). In that office, was working with a pretty progressive bunch…
How To Detox Before Mercury Filling Removal
Last week I wrote about the dumbest thing I’ve ever done to my health. It involved mercury fillings that I didn’t even know I had. Not my brightest move. Once I saw them, I immediately called my holistic doctor and setup an appointment to get them removed. It’s important to select a holistic doctor that can properly remove the fillings safely and without allowing the mercury to further penetrate your system. Anyway, I knew he would require me to detox before the procedure so I took it upon myself to start even before I went to my initial consultation. Why is this necessary? Consider this: a single mercury filling can release 15 micrograms of mercury per day. The EPA has set a safe daily intake of mercury at 0.1 microgram per kilogram of body weight. This means that a person weighing 125 pounds (which is my weight) would be able to…
