Foods To ACTUALLY Avoid During Pregnancy

There are certain things that truly annoy me in life. Laziness. Apathy. The FDA. Adults that like Justin Bieber. >And complete and utter nutritional misinformation.< The latter of which I run into a lot. Scott and I are planning on getting knocked up sometime in 2015, so lately I’m typing “pregnancy” into Pinterest and seeing what comes up. What comes up time and time again are graphics of what women should avoid during pregnancy. They often include: excess caffeine (yup) booze (duh) fish (wtf?) raw oysters (for the most part, wtf?) sushi (not necessarily) raw milk (again, wtf?) raw egg yolks (seriously, I can’t take it) These are some of the most nutrient-dense foods you can eat. Of course, you want to eat pastured egg yolks, wild fish, sustainably sourced and preferably local oysters, grass-fed & organic milk, etc. To read more about what you should eat during pregnancy, read…

Ten Ways To De-Stress TODAY

I always find myself looking at articles on how to de-stress. Stress is a killer. Unfortunately, more often than not the advice isn’t entirely practical. Sometimes, taking a vacation ain’t always realistic. And who actually finds getting their hair done to be relaxing? I certainly don’t. Sitting in those chairs for an extended period of time hurts my butt cheeks. Not to mention that these are things that need to be planned. Need to be paid for. Things that you can’t necessarily get done the day you feel you need to de-stress. So here are ten ideas on how to easily de-stress that you can do today. Ten Ways To De-Stress Today: Have sex. Sex is awesome. It’s fun. It releases tension as well as oxytocin. Oxytocin is nicknamed “the love hormone.” You guessed it – it promotes feeling of love and trust, thus revving up it’s anti-stress benefits.  Sex…

The Dumbest Thing I’ve Ever Done To My Health

If you follow me on Facebook, you may have seen me post about something incredibly dumb that I recently did. Seriously, this was one of the most dumbass moves I’ve ever pulled (and I’ve pulled a lot). The worst part is that it is something so seriously detrimental to my health, especially considering that we’re planning on getting knocked up next year. Though now that I think of it, going vegetarian and then vegan was pretty dumb of me too. But before I tell you what I did, let me back up a little. Right before I met Scott, I had a tooth with a mercury filling that needed to be removed. Not just the filling – the whole tooth. It was infected, cracked and really hurt. I found myself a holistic dentist and got that sucker pulled, mercury filling and all. So shortly after when I met Scott and…

The Healthiest, Most Detoxifying Green Smoothie

Most people do green smoothies completely wrong. They add a shit ton of fruit and little to no fat. This does two things: 1 – Spike your blood sugar. 2 – Ensures you won’t absorb any of the fat soluble vitamins that may be present – A, E, D and K. A lot of people also use smoothies as replacements for meals. For majority of people, I do not recommend this! Smoothies make a good snack, they’re a good option if you need to add more nutrition to your diet, or in my case, they’re sometimes a good option when I’m sort of hungry in the mornings but not really. Your smoothie should be loaded with healthy veggies (this is a green smoothie after all) but it also need to have fat. Fat will help you absorb the fat soluble vitamins but fat is also incredibly nutrient dense. Avocado and…

Smoked Salmon Scrambled Eggs with Probiotic Salsa

This is seriously a superfood breakfast. The eggs and salmon provide a hefty dose of omega-3s while the fermented dill & cucumber salsa is full of beneficial enzymes and probiotics. This will help you absorb and break down your food as well as give your gut a boost of beneficial flora. This helps keep your skin clear, wards off anxiety and depression, fights yeast infections, boost your immune system – I mean really, the list goes on. This stuff if HEALTHY. And it tastes good. This breakfast bowl is particularly rich i: B12, B3, B6, B6, vitamin A, vitamin D, copper, phosphorous and selenium. Who the hell said ever said eggs were unhealthy? Idiots. Not only is it incredibly healthy, it tastes great and is completely satisfying. That’s the thing about eating nutrient dense food! Hunger is actually your brain’s way of telling you that your body needs nutrients. When you…

Slow Cooker Lamb Shank

Lamb is easily one of my favorite meats. Lamb shank is one of my favorite ways to enjoy it. It’s not only incredibly healthy. Lamb shank is also reasonably priced and tastes awesome. I love lamb, and every time I say that I think of this guy: Lamb isn’t just a great source of protein but is also high in omega-3s, B12, CLA, selenium, B3, and zinc. It’s a particularly great protein if you’re planning on getting knocked up (which I am) or if you’re already knocked up. I now plan on eating this slow cooker lamb shank several times a month. So many nutrients! I served it over a mixture of mashed Japanese yams and white potatoes. It was seriously amazing. Why Healthy Relationships Are Crucial To Overall Health

One aspect of health the actual health industry rarely focuses on is the mental aspect and the role in plays in physical health. Yes, we know that stress is bad. We know that it causes inflammation and weakens the immune system. But by and large, the health industry – myself included – does not expand on these issues. We focus on what to eat, supplements, exercise and personal care, but focus much less on mental care. I intend to change that, starting with this article on the importance of healthy relationships in a healthy life. Whether or not you have a healthy relationship with your parents, sibling, friend, spouse or significant other is going to largely influence your health and well being. For the most part, these are the people close to you. The people you talk to regularly, you vent to, you hang out with, you lean on for…

How To Detox For Pregnancy

Scott and I are planning to get knocked up sometime in 2015. Back in the day, like, way back in the day – the time of our ancestors – people actually prepared their bodies for pregnancy. They did not take it lightly and they did not consider it something that should be done randomly. They considered it sacred. So sacred in fact that there were even specific foods reserved for a couple trying to get pregnant and pregnant women. These foods were extremely nutrient dense and included things like liver, fish eggs and egg yolks. But the big difference between us and our ancestors is not just the food, it’s the fact that we are bombarded with a ton of toxins everyday. We need to take time to remove these toxins before pregnancy to ensure a healthy pregnancy, healthy birth and healthy baby. Here’s how to detox for pregnancy. Good…

Mushroom, Arugula & Goat Cheese Frittata

I’ve been getting fancier with my breakfasts. Mostly because I’ve been getting bored with dippy/scrambled eggs. What I like about this recipe is that it’s actually easier than scrambled eggs (which you have to cook low and slow to actually make the taste good, rubbery eggs are gross). I quickly chopped some mushrooms and arugula, sautéed them, poured in the eggs, topped with goat cheese and baked. I didn’t have to keep my eye on it or stand by the stove to make sure the eggs didn’t overcook. Just throw this sucker in the oven and let it to its thing. And it tastes awesome. Not to mention that between the mushrooms and arugula, this dish is packed with antioxidants. Plus eggs are amazing for you.   MUSHROOM, ARUGULA & GOAT CHEESE FRITTATA Just throw this sucker in the oven and let it to its thing. And it tastes awesome.…

Fermented Dill & Cucumber Salsa

Recently I surprised Scott with a trip to Rehoboth Beach for his birthday. We love going to Rehoboth but didn’t get the opportunity to make the trek this past summer as much as we normally do. Rehbooth is one of my favorite beaches. Not because it has the clearest water and uncrowded beaches (it doesn’t – at all). But damn if that quaint-ish beach town doesn’t have some good food. Fresh seafood, good veggies, tons of gluten-free options and even an a juice bar called Green Man that sells awesome food. We go every time we’re in Reho. This last time, I ordered the smoked salmon on gluten-free bread. And I ordered an egg sandwich. I was hungry! I only ate half of each anyway. See that caper, cucumber, tomato topping? It was the f’ing bomb. I don’t even like capers and I loved it. I decided two things after…
