Paleo Refried Beans

I’ve never loved beans, but I do like refried beans with tacos. I don’t, however, love what they do to my stomach. There’s a reason a lot of people have issues with beans – they’re loaded with enzyme inhibitors and difficult to digest. They’re also full of phytic acid, which binds to minerals and prevents them from being absorbed. I know people love to talk about how healthy beans are and how they’re such a good source of protein, but 100 grams of pinto beans have seven grams of protein and roughly 22 grams of carbohydrate. Now compare that to wild salmon which has 25 grams of protein and 0 carbohydrates. Luckily for you, I recreated refried beans using eggplant. Most recipes call for zucchini, but zucchini and I don’t get along. Plus I had an eggplant in my fridge.   Paleo Refried Beans (No beans) I recreated a paleo…

The Best Homemade Facial Exfoliant For Super Smooth, Clear Skin

I know a thing or two about bumpy, unclear skin. And by that, I mean I had horrible skin for a solid ten years. TEN YEARS. The worst part about having unclear is that it’s impossible to hide. Sure, you can add foundation and powder, but if you actually have pimples and not just a fleeting zit – you can’t truly cover it. It’s still there and it’s still noticeable and you still have to look people in the eye with a little bit (or a lot a bit) of insecurity because problem skin is freaking embarrassing. It took a huge toll on my confidence growing up. If your skin is like mine, you need to exfoliate regularly. At least four times a week. This is not recommended for most people, but if I don’t do it this often then I can see and see gunk in my pores starting to form. I have…

The Benefits of Bone Broth + An Easy Bone Broth Recipe

Make your own bone broth with my easy-to-follow bone broth recipe, and learn about all the health benefits you get from drinking it! Also included: tips and answers to the most common bone broth questions. You know that Old Wives tale that when you’re sick you should drink chicken soup? Yeah. That’s true. And there’s actually science behind it. SCIENCE! But let’s get something out of the way first. I’m not talking about the chicken soup you get at some random restaurant. And I am also not talking about Campbell’s. Nope, I’m not even talking about buying organic chicken broth. I’m talking about the homemade, real-deal bone broth! What is Bone Broth? Bone Broth is a savory, nutrient-rich soup made by simmering animal bones with filtered water,  spices, vinegar, and vegetables, for a long period of time. No MSG. No processed leftover bits. Bone broth thickens quite a bit when chilled…

Paleo Spicy Mexican Chowder

I am REALLY digging soups lately. Maybe it’s because it’s freezing out. Maybe it’s because it snowed in DC yesterday. Maybe it’s because they’re so nutrient rich and gut healing. Maybe it’s because they’re just really effing good. Whatever it is, this soup was awesome. And it’s completely dairy-free and loaded with veggies. If I didn’t tell Scott I used cauliflower instead of cream, I honestly don’t think he would’ve even noticed. I know some people like to use coconut milk instead of milk to get a creamy soup, but let’s face it. Then your soup tastes like coconut. And is a bit sweet. I equate coconut with dessert, not soup. Using cauliflower as the creamy base was PERFECT.   Paleo Spicy Mexican Chowder This creamy paleo chowder is completely dairy-free and loaded with veggies. If I didn’t tell people I used cauliflower instead of cream, I honestly don’t think…

How To Get Rid Of A Hangover In Six Easy Steps

I probably should’ve written this before New Years Eve, but at least you’ll be able to reference this for all of your future hangovers (let’s get real, you’re bound to get another one at some point in your life). While I actually don’t get many hangovers these days, I was once a pretty big party girl. To an unhealthy point. Day drinking? Check. Having a drink at brunch the next morning to get rid of a hangover? Check. Drinking several nights in a row? Check. Drinking on a school night? Work night? Tuesday night? Any night? Check. Check. Check. I’ve always been interested in health, but in my late teens and early twenties, I was more concerned about partying with my friends. I was also pretty unhappy and drinking was fun, so I found myself doing it way more than I should. Hangovers once in a while are okay, regular hangovers are not.…

How I’m Preparing For Pregnancy AKA My Preconception Diet

True story: to freak me out and annoy me, my husband used to awkwardly rub my belly and in a disgustingly creepy voice whisper to me, “I’m gonna put a baby in there.” It was the worst. But now we’re actually planning on getting knocked up in 2015. I’ve talked a lot about preconception diets, how important they are, how I plan on doing one before I get preggo, etc.  Actually, we both are doing a preconception diet. Don’t forget that dudes need to do this too! It’s just as important for the husband to take steps to detoxify as well as nourish himself to be able to make a healthy baby. It takes two to tango ya’ll, in more ways than one. Why You Need To Do A Preconception Diet When Dr. Price traveled the world studying indigenous cultures, he discovered that they prepared for pregnancy from three months…

Chick-fil-A Is NOT Healthy Fast Food

A little while ago, I asked people on my Facebook page what the deal was with Chick-fil-A. I’ve never been there (it came to the DC area after I stopped eating junk food) and I was really having trouble understanding why it’s so popular. It’s fast food, after all. Much to my surprise (and dismay), a slew of people commented saying that they choose (and love) Chick-fil-A because it’s healthier fast food. One woman commented that she’d pick it up after work because it was a healthy option when she didn’t feel like making dinner. Another women said she frequently took her kids there because it was food she felt good about feeding them (yikes). And then one guy commented “daring” me to go after Chick-fil-A. I thought this was funny, and decided to expose Chick-fil-A for what it really is: junk food. No better than McDonald’s, Burger King or…

Pork Belly Burrito Bowl

It wasn’t that long ago that I first tried pork belly. Which is odd considering that I’m a pretty adventurous eater. I guess I kind of thought it was like bacon, and why would I get pork belly when I could get really amazing bacon from a great farmer at my farmers market? And then I saw that they had pork belly. So I decided to try it. My first reaction was literally “Holy shit.” While it is sort of like bacon, it’s also not. It has the fattiness of bacon that I love but it’s not smoky and it has a texture similar to a pork chop in there as well. Plus it has a crispy skin. It’s just so, so good. People have all these fancy ways of cooking pork belly, but most people cook it at a high temperature and then turn it down to a low…

Shrimp, Veggie and Kelp Noodle Stir Fry

Stir fry is a great option if you need to cook something quickly. Which was the case yesterday when I’d worked straight until 1:30, paused, and realized I was starving. I try to eat at the same time each day, but it’s not something I’m good at. Even I’m not perfect, which is unbelievable, I know. Anyway, after a marathon shopping trip at Trader Joe’s AND Whole Foods, I had a shit ton of veggies in my fridge, along with wild shrimp. Scott is obsessed with shrimp. I buy it in bulk when TJ’s actually has it because their wild shrimp is way cheaper than anyone else’s. So yeah, this is a bunch of veggies, along with kelp noodles (which are freaking AMAZING in Asian dishes) in a stir fry sauce. It’s really, really good. Paleo Shrimp, Veggie and Kelp Noodle Stir Fry This easy Shrimp & Veggie Kelp Noodle…
