I’m at expert at reviewing ingredient in popular products – from skincare to meal replacement shakes. Check out all of my reviews here. And here is An Unbiased Review of Flat Tummy Tea. You all know I’m no fan of meal replacement shakes. Because of that, you could say that this review couldn’t be truly unbiased. And you are probably right. But I try to keep it professional and only review the ingredients. I haven’t personally tried Flat Tummy products, but I also haven’t tried crack. That just ain’t for me. Neither are something that as a health professional, I would ever put into my body. So if you’re simply looking for a review of whether or not the products work, please read on. They may work, but they may work because you’re literally taking a laxative. The main ingredient in this tea is senna, something given to many patients…
Watermelon Kombucha Margaritas (Paleo, Low Carb)
Margaritas are my favorite cocktail of all time. To be fair, they’re actually the only cocktail I ever drink. There’s just something so refreshing and summery about a margarita. Even better if it’s a healthy margarita like this watermelon kombucha one, which screams summer to me. Tequila is my favorite liquor option for healthy cocktails because: It contains less congeners than other alcohols; congeners are substances like acetone and tannins that worsen hangovers.Tequila is naturally gluten-free (which this celiac mama loves)It does not spike blood sugar like other alcohols.A good quality silver tequila does not contain additives that many other alcohols contain, like corn syrup and caramel color. It tastes so great when paired with soda water and a little fresh juice (try tequila, soda water and a splash of watermelon juice if you don’t have kombucha!). Overall, tequila is just one of the healthiest alcohol options if you choose to…
Why Oat Milk Is Not a Healthy or Environmentally Friendly Option
I first heard about oat milk at a coffee shop near my house. “It’s the most environmentally friendly milk.” I was eavesdropping on the barista’s conversation with another patron. I wanted to interrupt and set the record straight, but then my toddler took off running and my chance to interject myself into a conversation I wasn’t invited to passed. Then last month, as I was picking up my Califia Farms coconut milk, a woman stopped to ask me if I’d tried oat milk. She admitted she was recently diagnosed as lactose intolerant. I’m going to tell you what I told her: I don’t recommend oat milk, from a health or environmental perspective. Here’s why. From a health perspective: Oatly, the most popular brand of oat milk, doesn’t just contain good ol’ oats and milk. It also contains canola oil, preservatives and synthetic vitamins. Canola oil, or rapeseed oil, is not…
Healthy Salmon Cakes with Tartar Sauce (Paleo, Gluten-Free, Keto)
Serve these healthy salmon cakes alongside some leafy greens for a light meal that is keto, low carb, grain-free and gluten-free! The other day I was in my kitchen; I had opened the refrigerator door about 17 times to hopefully inspire some dinner inspiration. I kept looking but all I saw was eggs, random veggies and some cold leftover chicken. I wasn’t feeling it. So then I walked over to my pantry and opened it about 28 times, hoping that something would catch my eye and inspiration would strike. Am I the only one who does this? Who opens up their fridge and pantry 85 times, hoping something will appear or I somehow overlooked something amazing? Well, this time it actually happened. The lowly can of wild salmon. $3.99 at Trader Joe’s. Full of omega-3s, vitamin D, calcium. And cheap as hell. Why you’ll love these healthy salmon cakes: I…
I drank celery juice for two weeks. Here’s what happened.
Nothing. Nothing happened. I expected something to happen, at least clearer skin from all the juice I drank first thing in the morning. But after drinking celery juice for two weeks and having high hopes, to be honest, I noticed no benefit. SO HERE’S WHAT HAPPENED. I asked for a juice for Christmas for this reason in particular: I was hopping on the celery juice train. I’d heard so many stories about it, how it cured everything from anxiety to eczema to psoriasis (to Epstein Barr and Strep??). I had so many people asking me about it – I decided I needed to give it a solid go for myself. So January came, and I did what I do every January. I gave up booze, sugar, dairy, processed food and now – I was adding in the miracle celery juice. And you guys, I WANTED it to work. I wanted…
Meal Plan / March 3rd-8th – Paleo, Gluten-Free
We are back from LA (where I got glutened twice – ouch) and I’m ready to jump into a week of healthy eats. To be honest, I kind of felt like shit by the end of the week in LA. I feel like there’s this stigma against gluten-free eaters – like it’s just a trend and only brainwashed idiots follow it. When in reality, even if you’re not celiac, there’s an extensive amount of evidence that gluten is harmful or at the very least difficult to digest – even without celiac. So when I sat down at The Draycott and told the waiter, “Just to let you know, I’m celiac.” And he said, “I have no idea what that is but okay.” I didn’t exactly feel comfortable eating there. But what were we going to do, leave? We had a sitter for the kids, LA was unusually cold and it…
Green Juice Mimosa
I woke up one Saturday a couple weeks ago, the day before my birthday. Scott and I were meeting our friends that night and I was EXCITED. In celebration, I made big breakfast and a green juice mimosa. I chose a low-sugar (okay, like, no sugar green juice) which made this mimosa very tart. If you prefer a bit sweeter, opt for a green juice made with an apple but still under 10 grams of sugar per serving. And read the bottle carefully, because many green juices have sugar listed as 10 or 11 grams, and then you realize the serving size is actually 2. And then you just drank the amount of sugar you should have in an entire day. Always check the sugar and the serving size! Back to the mimosas. I chose a VERY dry (low sugar) and organic blanc de blanc for my champagne, or sparkling…
Travel Meal Plan – Los Angeles
This week the fam and I are headed to Los Angeles! It’s actually a work trip but I’m still super excited. I love LA and it’s super easy to get celiac friendly food there. I figured it would be good to share this meal plan so you can see how we eat on vacation and during travel days. Because mama ain’t about to eat airplane food. First things first. Prepare. Prepare. Prepare. I’m going to make eggs muffins and sandwiches the night before. That way we can get the car packed the next morning, have breakfast on the way to the airport and have lunch on the plane. For plane snacks, I also bring Epic bars, bananas, these nut butter packs, coconut oil chips and pouches for the toddler (baby isn’t eating solids yet). When we get there, I’m going to head to Erewhon market, which is legitimately the best…
So, I have celiac disease.
I wanted to update you guys on some blood work I recently had done. I’ve been searching for a good primary care doctor for over ten years at this point. I was recently introduced to Capital Integrative Health just outside of DC. They are a functional medicine practice and they accept insurance! What a DREAM. But having dealt with over twenty doctors over the years, I went to the appointment unsure of what to expect. While our society kind of worships doctors as all-knowing beings, I’ve learned the hard way that they’re just humans who make mistakes – like all of us. I’ve dealt with some truly terrible doctors over the years. I once met with a doctor who told me that a vitamin D supplement was basically they same as a statin prescription. (FYI – this makes literally no sense.) I had an OBGYN that literally cursed during our…
Meal Plan
Earlier this week I was watching an episode of Giada. I freaking love Giada. Her delicious Italian food, her big ol’ boobs, her California inspired style, and her Sunday supper. It turns out that Giada practices the Italian tradition of having friends and family over on Sundays for a special dinner – which I think sounds AMAZING. Good food, good wine, good people. What’s better? Literally nothing. So this Sunday I’m planning on making spaghetti, an ode to both Giada and my husband, whose favorite food in the world is spaghetti. I’m pairing it with this amazing chicken I once had at a restaurant. I’ll be using Rao’s marinara (which I forgot to put on the grocery list) and castelvetrano olives. I HATE olives. Except for these olive. They the bomb. On Sunday I will be meal prepping the following, because meal prepping is LIFE:-meatloaf-mashed potatoes-shrimp and veggie stirfry-bone broth…
