Five Tips To Stay Healthy & Sane This Holiday Season (Hint: it ain’t about deprivation)

The holidays are inevitably a stressful time of year. But we don’t need to make it any more stressful on ourselves by freaking out about food choices. I can’t tell you how much bad advice I’ve seen circulating the internet on how to stay healthy this holiday season. They include: eating tiny portions at Thanksgiving and not going back for seconds going on a sugar detox amping up your gym schedule avoiding specific “fattening” foods saying no to dessert I know that when this advice is given, it’s good intentioned (at least I think it is). But it causes more stress and promotes the idea that the holidays and dinners, parties and the food during the holidays is somehow something that needs to be dealt with. It’s food. Not your creepy uncle from Kansas (no offense to Kansas). Food is not something that should induce stress. It shouldn’t make you uncomfortable.…

Arugula, Tomato & Burrata on Paleo Pizza Crust

I kid you not, this is the most legit paleo and grain-free pizza crust I’ve ever tried (not just the most legit pizza crust I’ve ever made – the most legit paleo crust I’ve ever tried). You can hold it like an actual pizza without it being a floppy mess, it stands up to a ton of toppings and it’s a bit chewy. And you can use this paleo pizza crust for any kind of pizza after this! I topped it with garlic and olive oil, then added arugula, roasted tomatoes and burrata. But my favorite way to eat it is with pizza sauce, fresh mozzarella and a ton of mushrooms (my favorite topping ever). Load it up with your favorites for a healthy pizza night! The recipe is actually pretty simple and it’s easy to make. Here’s what the dough looked like: Here’s what it looked like spread out…

The Healthiest Fast Food Restaurants

It might be surprising to some of you that a holistic nutritionist would recommend a fast food place at all. But let’s be realistic, sometimes life is hectic and you didn’t make dinner and you’re starving and you just need to quickly grab something to eat. I’ve been there. Hell, I’m there weekly. Yesterday I wrote an article on the surprisingly unhealthiest fast food restaurants. In doing research for these articles, I found that those restaurants were at the top of “healthy” list because they offer low-calorie and low-fat options. This does not make them healthy. Just because you can eat a 1,200 calorie burrito at Chipotle does not make it unhealthy. People, stop counting calories. Start looking at ingredients and start avoiding chemicals. The Healthiest Fast Food Restaurants Chipotle You’ve likely heard that Chipotle has officially removed genetically modified organisms from their restaurants. This is huge. The landscape of our…

The Surprisingly Unhealthiest Fast Food Restaurants

In doing research for this article, I found that these were some of the top “healthy fast food chains” simply because they offer low calorie options. Because it’s not 1979 and I actually know nutritional science, I’m calling bullshit on these chains. Low-calorie does not equate to healthy. In fact, if something is touted as low-calorie, you can almost guarantee it’s even more unhealthy. This is because low-calorie or low-fat options are usually loaded with chemicals like MSG and other “natural and artificial” flavors to enhance the taste. Food manufacturers also add sugar, artificial sweeteners and empty carbohydrates to these foods. When looking for healthy options, we need to stop looking at calories and fat content. We need to pay attention to the actual ingredients, which more often than not contain a ton of toxins, chemicals, GMOs, preservatives and all around horrible ingredients. Even though these chains are often considered healthy,…

Paleo Beef Stroganoff

I love me some Russian food. It’s so filling, hearty and healthy. Most recipes of beef stroganoff (or stroganov) call for flour. I’m not down with flour. It’s not nutrient dense but it is inflammatory, so I avoided it altogether to make this version of paleo beef stroganoff. I also didn’t have any wine, but found that soaking the meat in apple cider vinegar beforehand provided that wine flavor. I actually bought a cheap cut of grass-fed beef (skirt steak) which I always find tough. I read that marinated it in apple cider vinegar softens the meat, and it definitely did. I just cut the meat into strips, then covered in ACV and some olive oil. Paleo Beef Stroganoff I love me some Russian food. This easy Paleo Beef Stroganoff is so filling, hearty and healthy. Week In Review

This past weekend was my birthday weekend and Scott surprised me with an overnight stay at The Park Hyatt. We love going to hotels near our house because we can just Uber over quickly and there’s no long drive home. When we got there, they upgraded us to a suite since it was my birthday and offered to bring us a free bottle of wine. SCORE. Hey may look high, but believe it or not, this guy has never smoked a joint in his life. Even though it may look like it here. They bathroom was the size of the first room I ever rented and had a huge tub. LUXURIOUS. Yeah, that’s a bottle of Serenity for my bath. So, so relaxing. Shortly after arriving at the room, Scott surprised me with a MASSAGE. Not from him. A professional. She came up to the room with all of her…

Paleo Leek, Mushroom and Grape Tomato Risotto

Risotto is such a rich, decadent food. I mean, super creamy rice – what’s not to love? Well, I don’t love eating a giant bowl of rice. Don’t get me wrong, I eat white rice from time to time, especially if I’ve worked out that day. But a healthier option is definitely subbing cauliflower for the rice. And it actually tastes pretty amazing. Paleo Leek, Mushroom and Grape Tomato Risotto Paleo Leek, Mushroom and Tomato Cauliflower Risotto This is the perfect easy low-carb alternative to regular risotto! Loaded with healthy mushrooms, leeks and tomatoes and made extra creamy through the addition of coconut cream. 4 cups cauliflower (riced (using food processor or grater))4 large mushrooms (sliced)1 leek (sliced)3/4 cup grape tomatoes (halved)2 tbsp butter1/2 cup raw & grass-fed cream or coconut cream (the thick part at the top)salt and pepper Melt the butter over medium to medium-high heat. Mushroom, Arugula & Goat Cheese Frittata

I’ve been getting fancier with my breakfasts. Mostly because I’ve been getting bored with dippy/scrambled eggs. What I like about this recipe is that it’s actually easier than scrambled eggs (which you have to cook low and slow to actually make the taste good, rubbery eggs are gross). I quickly chopped some mushrooms and arugula, sautéed them, poured in the eggs, topped with goat cheese and baked. I didn’t have to keep my eye on it or stand by the stove to make sure the eggs didn’t overcook. Just throw this sucker in the oven and let it to its thing. And it tastes awesome. Not to mention that between the mushrooms and arugula, this dish is packed with antioxidants. Plus eggs are amazing for you.   MUSHROOM, ARUGULA & GOAT CHEESE FRITTATA Just throw this sucker in the oven and let it to its thing. And it tastes awesome.…

25 Paleo Breakfast Ideas With Egg-Free Options!

I often get asked what I eat for breakfast or if I have any advice on diversifying someone’s breakfast menu. The truth is, I almost always eat eggs for breakfast. I tried yogurt and berries recently but it didn’t fill me up (though it might fill you up). I find that people usually think fruit, nuts or a low-fat smoothie is an acceptable breakfast option. WRONG. You want breakfast to be full of fat and protein to keep you full and keep your energy up. And if you workout in the mornings or have a strenuous job, you should probably incorporate some healthy carbs into your breakfast equation. So here are some breakfast ideas, some of which were gifted to me from my amazing Facebook community (they’re the best). There are also several egg-free options, though I will never understand how anyone who isn’t allergic to eggs would ever give…
