Oatmeal Versus Eggs

I recently had a discussion with a coworker about the nutrient density of oatmeal versus eggs. According to her, oatmeal was filling, healthy, low in fat and much healthier than eggs. A lot of people think this. I was watching Parks and Rec the other day, and Anne ordered oatmeal and fruit instead of eggs because her character is so health conscious. As an aside, if you don’t want that show, you should probably start because it’s awesome. I decided to buy oatmeal (gluten-free of course) to perform an experiment. I rarely eat grains, and when I do it’s simple and easily digestible white rice. Then I soaked the oats overnight in raw milk and coconut milk, and I did this in a mini mason jar (which equated to about 1 cup of oats). I ate half for a morning snack and finished the rest the next day as an…

The Paleo SNAP Challenge Day 6

The hardest part of this challenge hasn’t been hunger or malnutrition, it’s been eating the same foods that lack variety. I am not one of those people who likes to eat the same thing day after day. I crave variety. I am completely bored with my food choices. I would love to eat sushi, Mexican, Russian, Thai and every food that I can’t eat right now. Getting creative with these foods has been challenging, but in a good way. It’s forced me to come up with more recipes, put more effort into planning and to think critically about the food that is available to me, which is great. Today for lunch I had boiled eggs with salsa and potatoes. I felt like it was an extremely random lunch. I fried the potatoes like potato chips, but by lunch time they were soggy. I love potato products so much that I didn’t even…

Chocolate Chip Cookie Brownies (Paleo & Primal)

I’ll be honest, I’m not a huge fan of sweets. I prefer bacon or my favorite potato chips, and I’ll actually take vanilla over chocolate any day. But sometimes, chocolate really hits the spot. And it tastes awesome with raw milk. These were pretty dense and gooey, which I love. Paleo Chocolate Chips Cookie Brownies These brownies are super easy to make and taste simply divine! Is Dairy Bad For You? Is It Paleo?

Just because something wasn’t eaten in the paleolithic era does not automatically make it unhealthy. Truth be told, a lot of us paleo peeps eat a lot of foods that were not eaten in the paleolithic era, though could have been reasonably obtained in smaller quantities, like almond flour, coconut milk, kelp noodles, etc. Just because it was not eaten during this time period is not a good enough reason to not consume dairy. Here are some common things I hear about dairy: We are the only animal to consume the milk of another animal. My response: We are the only animal to consume milk after infancy. We are also the only animal to drive and perform surgeries, should we stop doing that as well? But Isn’t Dairy Hard To Digest? Pasteurized dairy is indeed harder to digest. The pasteurization process destroys beneficial enzymes, bacteria and lactase. Lactase is the…

Top 10 Foods for Pregnancy and Fertility

The most important thing a woman can do when she finds out she is pregnant is eat nutrient dense foods. Pregnancy is not an excuse to eat whatever you want, it’s a time to nourish yourself and your baby. Ideally, it’s best to start preparing your body (and your partner’s body!) about 6-12 months prior to conception, but obviously, this is not realistic for everyone. So whether you are planning on getting pregnant or already are, here are my top 10 foods to eat to ensure a healthy mama, healthy baby and healthy birth. To preface the top ten foods for pregnancy, it is important to recognize that these are the exact foods to heal and boost fertility. Women experiencing infertility often turn to doctors, hormonal treatments and IVF, when the first place women and men should start are their diets. Our bodies are designed to reproduce. If they are…

High Protein + High Fiber Chocolate Pudding

Looking for a chocolate dessert free from refined sugar and starches? This delicious healthy chocolate pudding is easy to make and high in protein and fiber! Looking for a healthy chocolate pudding with no refined sugar and starches? Look no further than this High Protein Chocolate Pudding! This easy recipe for healthy chocolate pudding started out with me experimenting with one of my new favorite dairy products out there. I ordered raw and grass-fed cottage cheese from a local farm and it’s the best cottage cheese I’ve ever had. It eventually inspired the creation of this super-healthy high protein chocolate pudding recipe. I used most of the cottage cheese to make a lasagna (I use it in place of ricotta because it has a higher protein content). But I still had a ton leftover. So, I thought it would be interesting to make a protein packed, high fiber chocolate pudding with…

The Best Gluten-Free Vanilla Cake

I surprised even myself with how insanely delicious this turned out. I really, truly believe it’s the best gluten-free vanilla cake ever made. It’s THAT good. Okay so I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a thousand times – I am not a baker. I don’t like to bake. I don’t like to follow a recipe. I don’t like to measure out seventy three ingredients and be precise. But here’s the thing about this cake: the ingredients are fairly minimal, super common and easy! You don’t need a bunch of different ingredients to make this cake good, and it’s not at all complicated. And that’s the kind of baking I can get on board with. I adapted this recipe from a recipe I found on Nagi’s website for cake; I made this gluten-free and just health-ified it a bit. I’ve made it twice now with a few tweaks, and it’s…

Pistachio Keto Pudding (Paleo, Sugar-free & Dairy-Free)

This pistachio keto pudding is insanely delicious. It also happens to be paleo, dairy-free, refined sugar-free and perfect for those late night sugar cravings. Curb your sugar cravings with this keto pudding recipe! Ever since I had Storm, I’ve had a bit more of a sweet tooth. I’ve never really cared much about sweets – gimme chips over chocolate any day – but once I started breastfeeding, I just had sugar cravings. Now, I’m no longer breastfeeding. It was a long, drawn-out saga that I felt really guilty about but after severe tongue and lip ties, lactation consultants, exclusively pumping around the clock, I just couldn’t do it. Not sure how I got off on a tangent about my breastfeeding struggles here. Anyway! So when I was breastfeeding I wanted ALL. THE. FOOD. It was amazing. I ate all day long and loved it. But I also ate my fair…
