Why Oat Milk Is Not a Healthy or Environmentally Friendly Option

I first heard about oat milk at a coffee shop near my house. “It’s the most environmentally friendly milk.” I was eavesdropping on the barista’s conversation with another patron. I wanted to interrupt and set the record straight, but then my toddler took off running and my chance to interject myself into a conversation I wasn’t invited to passed. Then last month, as I was picking up my Califia Farms coconut milk, a woman stopped to ask me if I’d tried oat milk. She admitted she was recently diagnosed as lactose intolerant. I’m going to tell you what I told her: I don’t recommend oat milk, from a health or environmental perspective. Here’s why. From a health perspective: Oatly, the most popular brand of oat milk, doesn’t just contain good ol’ oats and milk. It also contains canola oil, preservatives and synthetic vitamins. Canola oil, or rapeseed oil, is not…

Gluten-Free Spring Charcuterie Board

It’s April, it’s sunny, and here in Charleston it’s HOT. It’s basically the best. And also the perfect time to make a gluten-free spring charcuterie board. Here’s how! Hi. I’m not sure if you’re new to my blog or if this is your 100th visit here. Either way, my name is Dani and I love a good goddamn charcuterie board. I make them at snack time for my kids (okay and for me). I make them for happy hour, before dinner, at every holiday and birthday and sometimes in lieu of an actual lunch. I like the versatility, the color, the indulgent feeling you get from a charcuterie board. Like you’re at a fancy restaurant, even if you’re in sweatpants watching Gilmore Girls for the two hundred and thiry third time. No, just me? Now I’m onto Ginny and Georgia so whatever. How to make a Gluten-Free Spring Charcuterie Board:…

Creamy Artichoke, Leek and Tomato Side Dish

For one of Scott’s Christmas gifts, I got us a weekend away in Easton, MD for New Years Eve weekend. It’s a cute little Chesapeake Bay town with lots of seafood, antiques and quaint everything. Our hotel was gorgeous. (I promise, Side Dish goodness is a part of this!) And they had an awesome restaurant with a heated outdoor patio. Which was great because I got to drink champagne outside in December without freezing to death. We walked around, hung out and checked out some great restaurants. One of which was Mason’s, a local farm to table restaurant with an emphasis on local seafood as well. I got a white fish (forget which kind exactly) on top of the creamy artichoke, leek, and tomato side dish that was amazing. I’ve been fantasizing about it inappropriately for almost a month now like a weirdo. So I recreated it for you guys.…

Matcha Green Tea Latte

If you follow me on Facebook (which you should!) you probably already know I’m not a coffee drinker. Matcha’s much more my bag. I hate the taste of coffee. In addition, I’m super sensitive to that much caffeine. I imagine drinking an entire cup would impart a similar reaction as a hit of crack for me. But since I’ve never done the latter, I’m not entirely sure. Matcha is such a healthier, tastier alternative. First of all, it’s creamy and a bit sweet. I love starting my day with the below recipe for my matcha green tea latte. It’s such a treat. Not to mention it’s seriously healthy. Here are some benefits: high in antioxidants (roughly 100x more than green tea) high in EGCg boosts memory, concentration, and focus contains caffeine – more than green tea but less than coffee boosts the immune system increases energy high in chlorophyll, which…

Foods To ACTUALLY Avoid During Pregnancy

There are certain things that truly annoy me in life. Laziness. Apathy. The FDA. Adults that like Justin Bieber. >And complete and utter nutritional misinformation.< The latter of which I run into a lot. Scott and I are planning on getting knocked up sometime in 2015, so lately I’m typing “pregnancy” into Pinterest and seeing what comes up. What comes up time and time again are graphics of what women should avoid during pregnancy. They often include: excess caffeine (yup) booze (duh) fish (wtf?) raw oysters (for the most part, wtf?) sushi (not necessarily) raw milk (again, wtf?) raw egg yolks (seriously, I can’t take it) These are some of the most nutrient-dense foods you can eat. Of course, you want to eat pastured egg yolks, wild fish, sustainably sourced and preferably local oysters, grass-fed & organic milk, etc. To read more about what you should eat during pregnancy, read…

How To Detox For Pregnancy

Scott and I are planning to get knocked up sometime in 2015. Back in the day, like, way back in the day – the time of our ancestors – people actually prepared their bodies for pregnancy. They did not take it lightly and they did not consider it something that should be done randomly. They considered it sacred. So sacred in fact that there were even specific foods reserved for a couple trying to get pregnant and pregnant women. These foods were extremely nutrient dense and included things like liver, fish eggs and egg yolks. But the big difference between us and our ancestors is not just the food, it’s the fact that we are bombarded with a ton of toxins everyday. We need to take time to remove these toxins before pregnancy to ensure a healthy pregnancy, healthy birth and healthy baby. Here’s how to detox for pregnancy. Good…

Why It Doesn’t Matter That Subway Removed Azodicarbonamide

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve likely heard that Subway previously used azodicarbonamide (azo for short) in their bread. Azo is a dangerous, unhealthy chemical that is used to make yoga mats. It has been linked to respiratory issues, allergies and asthma. After a huge internet outcry and a petition that was signed almost 100,000 times, Subway agreed to remove azo and promptly began manufacturing (notice I did not saying cooking) their products without it. But here’s why that doesn’t matter: Subway is still junk food. Subway still uses dangerous, toxic ingredients. 9-GRAIN WHEAT Whole wheat flour, enriched flour (wheat flour, niacin, iron, thiamine mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid), yeast, sugar, wheat gluten, contains 2% or less of: calcium carbonate, soybean oil, salt, wheat, rye, yellow corn, oats, triticale, brown rice, barley, flax seed, millet, sorghum, caramel color, refinery syrup, vitamin D2, sunflower lecithin, natural flavor, honey, ascorbic acid, yeast…

Why Are Hospitals Giving Out This Toxic Drink?

If you trust hospitals, you may not after reading the ingredients in a common drink they give out. My grandma is 88 and has spent most of her life heeding the advice of doctors. When they told her to stop eating eggs, she did. When they told her to make grains the basis of her diet, she did. And she’s suffering because of it. The woman that grew up eating fresh food from her backyard has slowly deteriorated. Over time, she lost over 50 lbs and six inches from her height. She had blood clots, surgeries—you name it. And every single time I’ve visited her in the hospital, they’ve given her Ensure. Right now she’s in a rehab facility recovering from knee surgery. What do they give her every morning? Ensure (with a side of toast, oatmeal or fake eggs – gotta keep that cholesterol down and the blood sugar…

Why I Don’t Support Meatless Monday & What To Do Instead

Plant-based diets for environmental protection are too short-sighted. They aren’t effective. No issue as big as environmental destruction is black and white, and going meatless one day a week is not a step in the right direction. Why is there no emphasis on organic, local and sustainable food? Why do the Meatless Monday recipes promote refined carbohydrates, inorganic tofu with no emphasis on GMO-free, low-fat dairy (which is extremely unhealthy) and refined vegetable oils? Today I’m going to wade through the BS claims that the Meatless Monday foundation makes, and provide a more sustainable and healthy alternative. LIMIT CANCER RISK: Hundreds of studies suggest that diets high in fruits and vegetables may reduce cancer risk. Colon cancer is associated with red and processed meat consumption. What are these mysterious hundreds of studies? Where are they? Because there are absolutely no links to support this very broad claim on the Meatless Monday website.…

An Open Letter To Jay-Z On Plant Based Diets

This is an open letter to one of my favorite artists, Jay-Z. I grew up listening to Jay-Z and can rap every word to Vol. 2…Hard Knock Life. I read this article in Rolling Stone about Jay-Z adopting a vegan diet until Christmas. And I get it. I’ve been there and done that. Like a lot of people, we’re led to believe that a plant based diet is healthier, it’s better for the environment, it’s SPIRITUAL. Except…it’s not and it isn’t. No one tells you that a vegan diet eliminates necessary fats and vitamins. No one tells you that grain and legume production is destroying American (and Brazilian) farmland. No one tells you that it’s more spiritual to buy local, organic animals that were raised on a nearby farm with love and sunshine; to know where your food comes from and develop a relationship with it. I don’t know about you,…
