Salmon Tartar

My fiancé, Scott, was a vegan for ten years. We are still trying to rectify the damage that was done to his body during this time. Even after we reintroduced foods like pastured eggs and grass-fed, raw cheese, his body still needed a lot of work. While he’s much healthier today, I still make it a point to feed him extremely nutrient dense food. And since he only started eating fish this past January, that means he eats a ton of seafood. Interestingly enough, he doesn’t like cooked salmon, but he’ll eat it raw. Weird, right? He goes from no animal products, to cheese lover, to raw fish eater. But I can’t blame him, because raw salmon is one of my favorite things to eat. Hellooo salmon sushi! I love it. Lucky for me, I sent him grocery shopping the other night and not only did he buy the most…

Fruit Parfaits

Every single time I’m in Whole Foods I am forced to walk by the damn fruit parfaits. They’re right by the kombucha so I really can’t avoid it. Those delicious looking, soybean oil and sugar laden fruit parfaits. I’m not big on sweets, but something about fruit parfaits really does it for me. Fresh fruit on top of vanilla pudding? Amazing. I also think it’s hilarious that McDonald’s convinced people that fruit parfaits are an acceptable breakfast meal. I mean, mine is because it’s actually really healthy. But adding fruit to an otherwise unhealthy dessert does not a breakfast make. Unless you’re making my fruit parfait. Then you can get away with it. . Paleo Fruit Parfaits These dairy-free paleo fruit parfaits make the perfect healthy breakfast, snack or dessert! These can be made ahead of time! 1 can coconut milk1/4 cup raw honey (use raw, organic honey, like THIS…

Proof That Eating Organic Can Reduce Cancer And How To Reduce Pesticides In Your System By 90% In One Week

Despite the massive amount of evidence, some people refuse to believe that buying organic is a healthier option. I can’t be the only one who’s ever been told that buying organic is a waste of money. In addition, a lot of people have this idea that conventionally grown produce is not only safe but just as good as the organic food. Let’s take a look at just a few things pesticides have been linked to: Cancer In addition, read this from the Department of Cancer Epidemiology at the Karolinska University Hospital, In animal studies, many pesticides are carcinogenic, (e.g., organochlorines, creosote, and sulfallate) while others (notably, the organochlorines DDT, chlordane, and lindane) are tumor promoters. Some contaminants in commercial pesticide formulations also may pose a carcinogenic risk. In humans, arsenic compounds and insecticides used occupationally have been classified as carcinogens by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. and from the…

Makeup Makeover

On average, women apply roughly 515 chemicals to their skin everyday. Considering that the skin absorbs much of what is applied to it and passes it along to the bloodstream, this is pretty problematic. What’s even more upsetting is that several of the chemicals found in beauty products are proven to be carcinogenic. Here are some common chemicals found in beauty products: parabens formaldehyde synthetic fragrances toulene aluminum sulfates sulfites phthalates lead and this is just a minuscule amount of harmful toxins found in common products. So here is a list of non-toxic makeup products that aren’t full of toxins and chemicals and won’t cause cancer. You’ll notice that Jane Iredale’s products make frequent appearances. This is because she has some of the best I’ve ever tried. For example, I bought her liquid mineral foundation last July. I’ve worn it every single day and still have about half of it…

Poached Eggs Over Prosciutto with Pesto

While I’m a big fan of spending time cooking dinner and drinking wine (it relaxes me!), I want my breakfast and lunch to be done in less than 10 minutes. I don’ t have time in the morning to make elaborate meals so the quicker the better. That makes poached eggs a great option. Also, if I’m eating breakfast, it’s usually because I woke up with ravenous hunger. It’s that or I’m not hungry at all so I fast. There’s no in between for me. So yesterday when I woke up ready to eat my cats, I had to think of a quick breakfast option. This fit the bill and was freaking delicious. I think it is what people affectionately refer to as “yolk porn.” Ingredients: 3 slices of prosciutto 2 tbsp pesto (I just blend basil, parsley, pine nuts, garlic and olive oil and keep it in the fridge)…

Three Reasons You Can’t Shake the Weight – and What To Do About It

I’ve had so many people contact me to ask what they can take to burn fat, how to lose the last ten pounds and what to do when they’ve dieted relentlessly and still just cannot shake the weight. If this sounds like you – there are very real reasons why this is happening. Diet I’m just going to call it like it is – diets are bullshit. They wreak havoc on the metabolism, leave people hungry and more likely to overeat, do not provide the necessary vitamins and minerals and the best part is – they set people up to gain even more weight! Counting calories, avoid the egg yolks, eating fruit for breakfast, eat cereal as a snack, eating low-fat yogurt to tide your hunger – none of these things are healthy. And yet, women is particular are encouraged to do them all in the name of losing weight.…

The Five Best Essential Oils For Weight Loss

In starting my research for this article, I began reading up on which oils were best for weight loss (duh). Which oil helped curve cravings, which oil was good for digestion, which oil could support a healthy metabolism and the like. I found that these are the five best essential oils to support healthy weight loss (of course, with a healthy diet and regular exercise): Grapefruit Many people who struggle with weight loss also struggle with insulin resistance. Grapefruit has been shown to reduce cravings but even more importantly, helps maintain an already healthy insulin response. A diet high in carbohydrates and sugar coupled with the intake of omega-6 vegetable oils (the Standard American Diet) leads to insulin resistance. This is one of the main reasons people are not able to manage their weight. Grapefruit can help balance hormones as well, which is a large part of weight loss. Lemon…

Fermented Bloody Mary

There’s a farm to table restaurant in my neighborhood that I love. As if that’s not awesome enough, they also make amazing bloodies (not the most appetizing nickname for a drink). There’s even an entire menu dedicated to all the different Bloody Mary options. One of the options, and it’s freaking delicious, is pickle juice. I don’t often drink liquor, but I do love me a good Bloody Mary. So I recently decided to make them at home. And then genius hit. I had an almost empty jar of Bubbie’s pickles. I used the fermented pickle juice to make an awesome Bloody, and I made it healthier! I’m all for making healthier versions of cocktails. The pickle juice is loaded with probiotics which makes it a great addition to this classic cocktail.     Fermented Bloody Mary I don’t often drink liquor, but I do love me a good Bloody Mary. So…
