When Things Don’t Go As Planned

Things don’t go as planned. On Thursday night, just as Scott and I walked into a restaurant to meet some friends for dinner, my water broke. At 23 weeks. I was in shock. I immediately called one of our midwives, who was actually at a nearby hospital attending another birth and told me to head in. We rushed to the hospital where they gave me an internal check and a sonogram. Oddly enough, the fluid I was leaking, while it seemed like amniotic fluid, doesn’t show “ferning” which is indicative of amniotic fluid. So they’re not 100% sure my water has broken, or rather that my membranes ruptured, but they’re almost positive. Which means I am on bed rest and living in the hospital for the rest of my pregnancy, which we’re praying will be at least another ten weeks. I’ve been so scared since this happened. I never expected anything like this.…

Pregnancy Update: Weeks Fifteen, Sixteen and Seventeen

Symptoms  + General Week 15: My nausea hadn’t completely subsided, but was a lot better. I definitely have to gag when I brush my teeth and scraping my tongue is a total pain, but I’m no longer puking several times a week. Always a plus. Week 16: Finally! I felt great week 16. My nausea was on its way out, I was into my second trimester and I was so relieved. I should’ve known better. It seems like every time I step back, chill out and think hey – maybe everything is okay, something goes wrong. I was still in the phase of needing to get up thirty-seven times a night to go pee. No biggie and nothing I couldn’t handle. It really didn’t even bother me. Until I couldn’t pee. Yeah, you read that right. One night I got up, ready to burst and I COULD NOT PEE. Let me tell you…

Constipation Busting Smoothie

Last week Scott and I got back from vacation – we decided to road trip. We went to Savannah, then to Destin, FL, then to Charleston. We spent the most time in Destin because they had a really beautiful beach. Unfortunately they didn’t have the best food. Don’t get me wrong, it definitely wasn’t bad. Just not the healthiest. Here’s an example. We went to a restaurant one night and I ordered the grouper pan sautéed in butter, garlic and herbs. IT CAME OUT BREADED. Nowhere on the menu did it say ANYTHING about breading. WHY in the world would anyone bread a beautiful, fresh piece of fish? It not only took away from the flavor of the fish and herbs – it made my stomach very unhappy. I tried to scrape off the breading but it didn’t work out so well. So to summarize, since we’ve been back my…

Five Things I Do Daily To Keep My Skin Clear, Hydrated and Healthy

Lemon water with coconut oil when I wake up. After I brush my teeth and tongue scrape (an ancient Ayurvedic way to detox) I drink a full glass of lemon water and take a tablespoon of coconut oil. Starting your morning out this way will improve your overall health, but your skin specifically. Here’s why. First, after eight hours of sleep (hopefully, you got eight hours, that’s another thing I do every single night to keep my skin healthy), the body is dehydrated. Drinking a glass of lemon water jumpstarts digestion. But adding the lemon also detoxes the liver – one of our main eliminatory and detoxification organs. This is because lemon encourages the liver to produce more enzymes, thereby more effectively removing toxins, waste, chemicals, unfriendly bacteria, etc. from the body. In turn, this not only improves digestion and detoxifies, but reduces inflammation as well. Guess what is at…

First Trimester Meals

A typical breakfast in my first trimester, when I was craving a bit more carbs. I had two eggs fried in butter with bacon on the side, hashbrowns and gluten-free sourdough from Bread Srsly – with more butter. Butter is great for building a healthy baby so I make sure to eat a lot of it (which let’s face it – isn’t hard).  Majority of my meals are simple and quick. Here is an easy dinner I tossed together. I used leftover pork, topped with tomatoes, avocados, jalapeno and romaine with a side of kraut for probiotics. The tortillas are completely paleo and from Seite Foods. Another perfect example of a healthy breakfast. Pastured eggs and bacon, hashbrowns and shredded Brussels sprouts. So good and so nutrient dense! This is from Greek Easter, when my husband, mother in law and I went to our favorite Greek restaurant. They roasted a…

Pregnancy Update: Weeks Ten, Eleven and Twelve

Symptoms Week 10: Lots of nausea. I don’t know what a small, medium to moderate amount of puking is. Majority of women I’ve talked to have told me that they often felt nauseous during pregnancy but never actually puked. I’m vomiting around four times a week. So maybe that’s moderate? 11: I have to pee all the time. I’ve had to pee all the time since about week six. I pee in the morning, before bed, and pee between three and four times a night. Am I even drinking this much fluid? Where is all this urine coming from? 12: Peeing and puking. This is the reality of pregnancy. Cravings + Food Week 10: None. 11: None. 12: Burgers. I discussed this with Scott, who said it’s not so much that I’m craving burgers – it’s that I’m always down to eat burgers. Which is true. I do love me…

Detox Coleslaw

So, I’m pregnant. And I’m looking for ways to safely detox. Especially now that my estrogen is naturally increasing (something that happens during pregnancy). Unfortunately, because of this increase, I’ve developed a small fibroid. Fibroids usually form due to estrogen dominance and don’t always cause issues. But, with continued high levels of estrogen – fibroids can actually grow very large and even need to be removed. Now, I know the fibroid I’m dealing with is just due to pregnancy. But I’d prefer to safely consume foods that bind to excess estrogen and flush it from the body. This coleslaw does exactly that. In addition to binding to carcinogens (which cause cancer) and flushing them from the system all while encouraging regularity. Cruciferous veggies are a great source of fiber. Let’s not forget how important pooping is for proper and effective detoxification. Regular bowel movement effective remove dead cells, toxins, waste…

Pregnancy Update: Weeks Seven, Eight, Nine

WEEK SEVEN Symptoms This week is when nausea really hit. One night, my husband and I were walking to dinner – it was about a 10-15 minute walk. It took us much longer because I had to stop, pause, bend over and violently dry heave. It was also during this week that my genius of a husband starts asking, “Why are you so dramatic when you gag?” As if I’m doing it purposely. As if I have control over my body’s intense bouts of nausea and the fact that it’s so intense that I have to physically bend over, tense my shoulders and loudly gag. I told him I was going to kill him. Weight Gain None yet. Mood Still nervous. Even though the spotting had stopped and I was told it was because of the polyp – I was still just constantly uneasy. Food + Cravings The week prior,…

Mexican Cauliflower Rice

I love me some Mexican rice. When I was younger and would go to Mexican restaurants, I’d often just eat rice tacos. I’d just put rice in some tortillas and go to town. No wonder I had so many issues with my skin, digestion, mood, hormones and blood sugar! Hello, refined carbohydrates – I love you. I needed to discover cauliflower rice. Now, when I make Mexican rice I often use white rice – and you can read my explanation for why I eat white rice and white it’s healthier than brown rice here. But now that I’m pregnant, I want to get all the nutrients I can. And let’s face it, cauliflower is a whole hell of a lot more nutrient dense than white rice. Cauliflower has vitamin C, vitamin K, folate and a whole bunch of minerals. It’s low in carbohydrates, so the blood sugar doesn’t spike but remains…

DIY Hair Oil for Split Ends, Dryness + Growth

I feel like I’m forever in a state of growing my hair out. Really. I want it to be mermaid long. I want it to grow to below my ribs. It’s still just below my (perky!) boobs so I’m getting there! It’s long but not quite where I want it to be. Like most people who grow out their hair, of course, I deal with dryness, split ends and overall unhealthy hair. In fact, a few months ago I was dealing with a ton of breakage. My hair was so weak at the ends it was basically cutting itself. I couldn’t figure out the issue. My hair is thick, healthy and grows well…until you get to the ends of my hair. I cut it semi-regularly and do everything I should to keep it healthy. I don’t over-wash it and I rarely use heat tools. What was up?! The ends of…
