Move over avocado toast, this gluten-free recipe for smoked salmon on toast is as delicious as it is healthy! Rich in protein and omega-3 fatty acids, it’ll be your new favorite breakfast!
I love me some smoked salmon on toast. But being celiac, I never feel comfortable ordering it at a restaurant. I always have to wonder if they sliced it using the same knife they use for regular bread, or if they prepare it on the same surface. I just can’t take that chance.
Which is why I almost never eat bread. We don’t have it a lot at home, but I’ve recently decided I’m going to start incorporating some fancy gluten-free toast into my diet. Why should I be deprived when I see all these delicious toasts on Instagram?!
Isn’t toast unhealthy?
Don’t get me wrong. Bread is not exactly a health food, it’s refined carbohydrate. But I’m also not one of those nutritionists who only eats clean 100% of the time.
I make paleo pancakes on the weekend. I love a good margarita. And dammit, I really love smoked salmon on toast. I mean look at this!
How could you not love it? It’s BEAUTIFUL!
Health Benefits of smoked salmon include:
- great source of the omega-3s EPA and DHA, which are beneficial for heart, brain and mood health
- extremely anti-inflammatory (again, great for brain and mood health!)
- a high-quality source of complete protein
- a wonderful source of b vitamins, particularly b12 (crucial for brain and mood health and staves off depression and anxiety)
- a rich source of selenium
More healthy toast toppings:
- avocado toast with a poached eggs
- guacamole and pickled onions and/or a fried egg
- almond or pecan butter toast with banana and chia seeds
- toast with egg salad
- beetroot hummus, arugula, and radish slices
- using a slice of potato or sweet potato as the toast
- toast topped with chicken liver mousse (an incredibly nutrient-dense treat!)
Which brand of gluten-free toast is best?
My favorite brands of gluten-free bread are Canyon Bakehouse and Simple Mills. Canyon Bakehouse is in most grocery retails across the US and Simple Mills is in most health food stores. You have to bake the Simple Mills bread, but it’s absolutely delicious. As far as sliced bread, Canyon Bakehouse tastes exactly like regular bread!
Tips for making this recipe:
- Top your salmon toast with some capers if you’re a fan.
- Take this to the next level by stirring some finely grated lemon zest and black pepper into the cream cheese before spreading it onto your toast.
- Want to add some more color? Use multicolored tomatoes!
- If your tummy doesn’t like raw onions, you can quick-pickle them in some ACV. Place thinly sliced onion in a bowl and toss with 1 tsp of sea salt. Whisk apple cider vinegar, some lemon juice, and 1/2 tsp sea salt. Add the red onions, making sure that all the onions are submerged in the pickling liquid. Cover and let sit at room temperature for at least 10 minutes, better after one hour.
