Paleo Fried Oysters

I love oysters. They’re extremely nutrient rich, high in zinc, they taste amazing and they remind me of summer. I impulse bought a tin of shucked local oysters from Whole Foods the other day, and since I haven’t had fried oysters in a solid five years, decided to make some. – Paleo Fried Oysters I love oysters. Paleo Biscuits

Truth be told, I’ve never been a huge fan of biscuits. I kinda feel like there are two people: people from the South who grew up eating sausage gravy over biscuits, and people from the North who grew up eating cream chipped ham over toast. I fall into the latter category. Except when I went to my best friend’s family’s vacation to Myrtle Beach every year when I was a kid. Then I was all over some sausage gravy and biscuits. Truth be told again, these aren’t those large, fluffy, white biscuits you find in the south. These are crumbly, buttery and delicious. They go great with soup, which is what we’ve been eating them with. I also discovered that they’re PERFECT for breakfast sandwiches. Throw a fried egg, some bacon or sausage, maybe even some grass-fed and raw cheese (if you eat dairy) on these suckers and you’ve got an…

Paleo Honey Sesame Chicken

I looove Chinese food. I grew up eating it; my best friend, Jennifer’s mom would it order it weekly for us. That was back in my days of eating white bread topped with margarine topped with sugar. That’s not a joke. I actually used to do that. No wonder why I had such severe acne as a kid. These days, I don’t eat Chinese food, ever. Eat it at a restaurant or order it, that is. This is for two reasons. One, it DESTROYS my stomach. I have a weak stomach. Filling it with MSG, vegetable oils, high fructose corn syrup and who knows what else is not only unhealthy, it physically hurts me. The other reason is because once I was reading about these college kids who collected leftover food from restaurants to make compost for their plants. They found that without fail, every time they used leftover Chinese…

Grain-Free Enchiladas

Scott and I love Mexican food. LOVE. I mean, hello, we’re American after all. Unfortunately we don’t go out to eat it very often because Mexican food is loaded with GMOs (read: corn). Corn is one of the highest genetically modified crops in the country, so everything from tortilla chips to tacos to enchiladas is likely GMO. And don’t even get me started on the vegetable oil most restaurants use. This is why I was so happy to recreate this Mexican classic. I’ve tried different recipes for the tortillas and this is my favorite. Like a normal flour tortilla, it doesn’t have much flavor but it has a the same texture and absorbs the enchilada sauce. Not to mention it’s packed with protein from the eggs instead of carbs from wheat – which spikes your blood sugar and causes inflammation. It was also pretty easy to make. Save for making…

Healthy Chicken Tacos

I love me a good taco. Who doesn’t? They’re the Mexican version of sandwich and they’re spicy and delicious. Also, it’s WAY easier to make a grain-free version of a taco and make it taste good than it is to make a grain-free version of a sandwich. Have you tried grain-free bread? Not so good. Have you tried my taco shell recipe?! It’s freaking awesome. I use tapioca flour, which is a safe starch and easy to digest. I like to add garlic and chipotle powder to the taco shell, but you can use any spice you like. Or not. Do your own thang. Healthy Green Bean Casserole (Gluten-Free, Low-Carb)

This healthy green bean casserole is low carb, gluten-free and so easy to make with simple ingredients! Perfect for the holidays! Wow your guests with this Healthy Green Bean Casserole! It’s that time of year, ya’ll! November is here which to me means holiday season! And to be quite honest, I’d put up a Christmas tree right this second if it wouldn’t drive my husband crazy every time he saw it for the next two months. The lovely green bean casserole is often passed over for fancier side dishes on holidays, like sweet potato casserole or stuffing. But it’s always been one of my favorites. I can’t get enough of those crunchy onions on top – which, let’s face it, are basically just onion rings. Why you will love this Healthy Green Bean Casserole recipe: Good news, everyone.  I’ve found a way to make this classic Thanksgiving side dish healthier, more…

The Surprisingly Unhealthiest Fast Food Restaurants

In doing research for this article, I found that these were some of the top “healthy fast food chains” simply because they offer low calorie options. Because it’s not 1979 and I actually know nutritional science, I’m calling bullshit on these chains. Low-calorie does not equate to healthy. In fact, if something is touted as low-calorie, you can almost guarantee it’s even more unhealthy. This is because low-calorie or low-fat options are usually loaded with chemicals like MSG and other “natural and artificial” flavors to enhance the taste. Food manufacturers also add sugar, artificial sweeteners and empty carbohydrates to these foods. When looking for healthy options, we need to stop looking at calories and fat content. We need to pay attention to the actual ingredients, which more often than not contain a ton of toxins, chemicals, GMOs, preservatives and all around horrible ingredients. Even though these chains are often considered healthy,…

An Unbiased Review of Advocare

Way back when I wrote my review of Herbalife, I had no idea it would garner the attention that it did. After Herbalife, I reviewed Isagenix because I received so many emails asking me about the quality of the products. Today, after receiving yet another review request for Advocare, here it is. First of all, I do not advocate meal replacement shakes in general. The basis of my nutrition coaching is not about shortcuts. It’s not about drinks that help you become “trim,” and it’s not about sketchy protein bars. Before it’s asked, this is the protein I use and recommend. I couldn’t find one good enough on the market, so I made my own. Grass-fed collagen with six organic superfoods: kale, spirulina, wheatgrass, broccoli, spinach and turmeric. I drink it in my daily smoothies and it gives me LIFE. Aka a healthy gut, glowing skin, strong digestion and energy…

Are Burger King’s New “Satisfries” Actually Healthier?

Burger King has come out with a new fry recipe called Satisfries. It’s supposed to be healthier than the McDonald’s fries. They contain 40% less fat and 30% fewer calories. Is it actually better? No. The ingredients in the Satisfries are: Potatoes vegetable oil (contains one or more of these oils: canola, soybean, cottonseed, sunflower, corn) tapioca starch modified corn starch-modified paprika extract (color) rice flour salt sodium acid pyrophosphate (to maintain natural color) turmeric extract (color) xantham gum Now compare them to the regular fries: Not too different, huh? Not only do the Satisfries contain GMOs, they are deep fried in vegetable oils. These oils are extremely inflammatory. This means they wreak havoc on the body. They are very high in omega-6 fatty acids and very low in omega-3 fatty acids. Even small amounts of this oil distort omega 3 to 6 balance that is necessary to maintain a healthy body…

The BEST Paleo Pizza Recipe

I have finally done it. I’ve found a recipe for grain-free pizza that doesn’t include any crappy ingredients. I’ve been searching for this for YEARS. There have been so many cauliflower pizzas in my house (which really are nothing like pizza, you can’t even hold a slice of it like pizza) and almond flour pizzas (which have bad texture and well, taste like almond flour). I’ve made coconut flour pizza and it has both a bad texture and bad taste. I have even had those all-purpose gluten-free pizza mixes, which are remarkably similar to cardboard. I had resigned myself to the fact that the only pizza that could ever truly taste like pizza, is a wheat-based crust. Until now. This recipe isn’t all me. I’ve gone Sandra Lee Semi-Homemade on ya for this one. The crust mix does come out of a box. But guess what? It’s made of tapioca,…
