The Healthiest Fast Food Restaurants

It might be surprising to some of you that a holistic nutritionist would recommend a fast food place at all. But let’s be realistic, sometimes life is hectic and you didn’t make dinner and you’re starving and you just need to quickly grab something to eat. I’ve been there. Hell, I’m there weekly. Yesterday I wrote an article on the surprisingly unhealthiest fast food restaurants. In doing research for these articles, I found that those restaurants were at the top of “healthy” list because they offer low-calorie and low-fat options. This does not make them healthy. Just because you can eat a 1,200 calorie burrito at Chipotle does not make it unhealthy. People, stop counting calories. Start looking at ingredients and start avoiding chemicals. The Healthiest Fast Food Restaurants Chipotle You’ve likely heard that Chipotle has officially removed genetically modified organisms from their restaurants. This is huge. The landscape of our…

The Surprisingly Unhealthiest Fast Food Restaurants

In doing research for this article, I found that these were some of the top “healthy fast food chains” simply because they offer low calorie options. Because it’s not 1979 and I actually know nutritional science, I’m calling bullshit on these chains. Low-calorie does not equate to healthy. In fact, if something is touted as low-calorie, you can almost guarantee it’s even more unhealthy. This is because low-calorie or low-fat options are usually loaded with chemicals like MSG and other “natural and artificial” flavors to enhance the taste. Food manufacturers also add sugar, artificial sweeteners and empty carbohydrates to these foods. When looking for healthy options, we need to stop looking at calories and fat content. We need to pay attention to the actual ingredients, which more often than not contain a ton of toxins, chemicals, GMOs, preservatives and all around horrible ingredients. Even though these chains are often considered healthy,…

Ground Pork, Veggie & Kelp Noodle Stirfry

I made this yesterday and honestly didn’t expect it to taste so awesome. Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t expect it to taste bad, it was just really effing good. Like, ridiculously delicious. I think the almond butter was an awesome addition. I don’t often cook with it, usually I just eat it raw. But it’s so creamy and delicious. I’m in love. Paleo Pancit

I grew up eating Filipino food because I had Filipino neighbors and went to school with a bunch of Filipino kids. When they would come to school with pancit I’d always try to trade them for my ham sandwich, which never worked. When I went to a Filipino birthday party, you could find me close to the giant bowl of pancit refilling my plate. Because there was always a giant bowl of pancit and I love it. While pancit is traditionally made with rice noodles, I swapped them out for these noodles which are a great source of iodine. Coupled with all the veggies, this is a super healthy meal. You can also make a ton of it at once like I did to eat for lunch throughout the week.     Paleo Pancit While pancit is traditionally made with rice noodles, I swapped them out for these noodles which…

Paleo Cauliflower Chowder

We’ve been eating a lot of soup lately for two reasons: 1) DC is FREEZING and 2) Scott’s had an upset stomach lately that stemmed from what we think was food poisoning. Soups are not only easy to digest but are also healing to the gut, so I’ve basically been making soup every night for dinner. I’m currently working from Whole Foods and it’s even freezing in here. It’s 16 degrees out. My fingers are so cold that I can barely type. I really wish I had some soup right about now.    Paleo Cauliflower Chowder This Paleo Cauliflower Chowder is easy to make and so filling, nutritious and satisfying, everyone will be asking for seconds! 4 cups homemade bone broth1 head cauliflower (broken up into small pieces)1 onion (diced)2 carrots (diced)2 celery stalks (diced)1 garlic clove (minced)2 tbsp butter Melt butter over medium high heat and sauté the carrots…

Paleo Egg Roll In a Bowl

When I was younger, my friend Jennifer’s parents would regularly order us Chinese food. I was obsessed with egg rolls. Sometimes I would just eat an egg roll (or a few!) for dinner. Jennifer and I had this really weird way of eating them in which we completely disassembled them. You ate the outside, then the inside. Always dipped in that weird orange duck sauce. At this point in my life, it’s been a solid four years since I’ve had Chinese food. So I have to settle for making my own Paleo Egg Roll in a Bowl, which I find tastes better anyway. I got the idea for this Paleo Egg Roll recipe from a restaurant recently. They had an unstuffed egg roll option with rice and shrimp – I thought it was a great idea. You can add any protein you like, I used chicken. Paleo Egg Roll In…

The Benefits of Bone Broth + An Easy Bone Broth Recipe

Make your own bone broth with my easy-to-follow bone broth recipe, and learn about all the health benefits you get from drinking it! Also included: tips and answers to the most common bone broth questions. You know that Old Wives tale that when you’re sick you should drink chicken soup? Yeah. That’s true. And there’s actually science behind it. SCIENCE! But let’s get something out of the way first. I’m not talking about the chicken soup you get at some random restaurant. And I am also not talking about Campbell’s. Nope, I’m not even talking about buying organic chicken broth. I’m talking about the homemade, real-deal bone broth! What is Bone Broth? Bone Broth is a savory, nutrient-rich soup made by simmering animal bones with filtered water,  spices, vinegar, and vegetables, for a long period of time. No MSG. No processed leftover bits. Bone broth thickens quite a bit when chilled…

Shrimp, Veggie and Kelp Noodle Stir Fry

Stir fry is a great option if you need to cook something quickly. Which was the case yesterday when I’d worked straight until 1:30, paused, and realized I was starving. I try to eat at the same time each day, but it’s not something I’m good at. Even I’m not perfect, which is unbelievable, I know. Anyway, after a marathon shopping trip at Trader Joe’s AND Whole Foods, I had a shit ton of veggies in my fridge, along with wild shrimp. Scott is obsessed with shrimp. I buy it in bulk when TJ’s actually has it because their wild shrimp is way cheaper than anyone else’s. So yeah, this is a bunch of veggies, along with kelp noodles (which are freaking AMAZING in Asian dishes) in a stir fry sauce. It’s really, really good. Paleo Leftover Turkey Salad Recipe – Sweet & Spicy

An easy and healthy paleo turkey salad recipe great for using up leftover turkey meat from Thanksgiving! Ideal for meal prepping. When life gives you leftover turkey – make this easy paleo turkey salad recipe! So. I have a giant, barely touched turkey in my fridge. Our Thanksgiving dinner consisted of five people, only three of which actually ate turkey. We bought a thirteen pound bird. That’s over four pounds per person. So to say I have a lot of leftover turkey on my hands is a bit of an understatement. I basically have an entire bird to eat myself because Scott doesn’t eat turkey. I am dying to make bone broth out of the carcass though so I have to come up with easy and healthy recipes to use the actual turkey meat on it. I recently went to a girlfriend’s baby shower and her mom made really good…

Gluten-Free Fried Rice

Recently I was not in the mood to cook. Which is rare for me because I love cooking and find it relaxing. For whatever reason, I didn’t wanna do it, but also didn’t want to spend money on takeout, not to mention the fact that you rarely have any idea what’s actually in takeout. Vegetable oils? Most likely. Are they GMO? Most definitely. I didn’t want to deal with all that. Luckily, I always keep cooked white rice on hand. I’ll make a few cups of it on a Sunday to eat throughout the week. Scott and I had both worked out earlier in the day and remained pretty low carb, so I knew adding some carbs in would be a good option for both of us. And if you’re wondering how white rice is a good option or considered a safe starch, or even paleo – read this article.…
