Why I Don’t Recommend a Vegan Diet

Before you decide that this article has some sort of agenda or that I’m bankrolled by the dairy industry (yes, I’ve actually beed accused of that) let me just clarify that I’m sharing this information for a few reasons, one being that veganism is a hugely popular diet and people should really be aware of the pitfalls of it. The other being that I was a vegan and it basically wrecked my health (you can read more about that here). My intention is not to bash veganism, but to be honest with you – because so many others are not (or, they’re just unaware of the facts below). I share this information with you not because this is my opinion, but because this is the reality of a plant based diet. So before you decide to leave a hateful comment, know that I’m coming from a good place. People deserve…

Five Reasons You Should Take Collagen Everyday

Sometimes, I think our ancestors knew more about nutrition than modern day health professionals. Okay, I sort of think this constantly, especially health professionals that promote low-fat, processed foods over nourishing, traditional foods humans have been eating for thousands upon thousands of years. Like bone broth. Our ancestors ate every part of the animal. They made use of the hide, made tools from the teeth, made broth from the bones and feet. This broth left them with a mineral-rich, gelatinous substance rich in collagen – which is the most abundant protein in the body. While I love me some bone broth, the reality is that I don’t always drink it. Whether that’s because I live in DC and these swampy summers leave me wanting to bathe in ice more than drinking a cup of hot broth or because I just don’t have any on hand. Supplementing with collagen is one…

Turkey Pot Pie Soup

Got Turkey leftovers from Thanksgiving? Make Turkey Pot Pie Soup! Every Thanksgiving, I’m left with a ton of turkey. I usually make things like turkey pot pie and sandwiches out of it. This year my mother in law called and asked if we really needed a turkey if only a few of us actually ate turkey. I DO! I almost shouted into the phone. I’m so adamant about getting a turkey because I love, love, love making broth with the carcass. Turkey broth is one of my favorites, but I only get to make it once a year. And I’m not about to give that up. For a recipe check out my post on how to make bone broth. Anyway, so I’m racking my brain trying to think of what the hell to make with the massive amount of leftover turkey meat I have. I made paleo & grain free…

My Long and Difficult Journey To Health

I think a lot of people assume that as a health coach, my eating habits are perfect and always have been. The truth is, there is no such thing as perfection when it comes to eating. My journey to healthy eating is a long, sordid affair of trial and error. A lot of trial and error. Growing up, we didn’t have a lot of money. I was raised mostly by my grandmother, who had to buy groceries (and just about everything else) for three kids on a very small amount of money each month. She did the best she could and I’m forever grateful. School lunches consisted of white bread with mayonnaise and cheap ham with hard, gelatinous chunks and a back of chips. It was such a treat to have bacon and eggs for breakfast, but more often than not it was cereal or cinnamon rolls from a can.…

Five Tips To Stay Healthy & Sane This Holiday Season (Hint: it ain’t about deprivation)

The holidays are inevitably a stressful time of year. But we don’t need to make it any more stressful on ourselves by freaking out about food choices. I can’t tell you how much bad advice I’ve seen circulating the internet on how to stay healthy this holiday season. They include: eating tiny portions at Thanksgiving and not going back for seconds going on a sugar detox amping up your gym schedule avoiding specific “fattening” foods saying no to dessert I know that when this advice is given, it’s good intentioned (at least I think it is). But it causes more stress and promotes the idea that the holidays and dinners, parties and the food during the holidays is somehow something that needs to be dealt with. It’s food. Not your creepy uncle from Kansas (no offense to Kansas). Food is not something that should induce stress. It shouldn’t make you uncomfortable.…

Paleo Asian Noodles With Shrimp

Since I love me some Asian food but can’t handle the ingredients in most Asian restaurants, I’ve become pretty good at creating my own Asian inspired dishes. I’ve found that at a lot of restaurants, they use MSG, GMOs, vegetable oils and high fructose corn syrup. And I’ll be honest, while it tastes awesome, it makes me feel like shit. Luckily, this is super easy to make and not at all time consuming. It tastes great and is the perfect option when you’re craving some Asian style noodles. If you’re wondering why this recipe is labeled paleo and I used white rice noodles, read my article on why white rice is healthier than brown rice and why it’s a paleo approved safe starch here. To make it traditionally paleo, just swap the rice noodles for kelp noodles, spiralized zucchini, even spaghetti squash. They’re all great! Paleo Asian Noodles With Shrimp…

Paleo Pork Belly Hash

This past weekend I went to the farmers market and bought a beautiful piece of pastured pork belly. You can see how I cooked it here. I decided to make a paleo pork belly hash, because hash anything is amazing. And adding pork belly basically blew my mind. I love pork belly. I know pork belly has a bad reputation, as does bacon. But bacon actually isn’t the devil’s food you’ve been led to believe it is. It’s actually high in monounsaturated fat, the same fat found in olive oil. The same fat that people in the Mediterranean eat and live healthier, longer lives. Read my article on why bacon is a health food and be sure to thank me later! Paleo Pork Belly Hash Take your breakfast game to the next level by making this simple yet delicious Paleo Pork Belly Hash! Included: My tip for the crispiest potatoes! 1…

Super Easy Pork Belly

Okay so before you think this picture is an entirely accurate depiction of what this pork belly will look like when it’s finished – I had to take it out of the oven to photograph because the sun was going down! It now gets dark around 5pm, and I put this in the oven around 3pm and it wasn’t done cooking, but I wanted to have a picture to share this awesome recipe with you guys! So just know that in real life, the skin is way darker and crispier. I know that there are a ton of recipes out there for pork belly. Most involve spices, scoring, starting at one temperature, changing to another and putting the pork belly in a steam bath. I don’t enjoy any of that. I like to keep my cooking as simple as possible. Sometimes I do score the skin, other times I don’t.…

Paleo Meal Planning: How I Make 15+ Meals For The Week In Two Hours

I have a bit of a weekly ritual. Every Thursday I plan out our meals for the week ahead, every Friday I grocery shop, and every Sunday I take two hours to prepare the majority of the food for that week. You know that saying, ‘It’s only effort until it’s habit’? That especially applies here. Planning ahead not only saves you a ton of money, it makes it easier to grocery shop, easier to plan your meals and easier to maintain your health. It’s much more difficult to walk into the grocery store, guess what you should buy, hope it’s healthy and have no actual plan. And let’s face it, you might just walk out with a bag of gluten-free Oreo imposters, a tub of guacamole and a bag of chips (I’ve literally done this before). To help you out, feel free to copy and paste my simple weekly meal…

What recipe would you like to see next from me? Let me know in the comments! Paleo Honey Sriracha Chicken This easy sweet and spicy Paleo Honey Sriracha Chicken is a meal I cook whenever I crave Chinese take-out but want to keep things healthy.
