How To Naturally Overcome A Cold

I’m currently sick in bed as I write this. It’s that time of year – the weather has transitioned to basically freezing (okay, it’s only about 40 degrees in DC but I am not a fan of the cold), it’s the holidays and I’ve been busy preparing for everything that’s coming up in the next couple of months. Considering I rarely ever get sick, I thought I’d share some of my favorite remedies to prevent colds and eliminate them once you’ve already caught one. Bone Broth Bone broth is full of vitamins and minerals as well as healthy fats. It strengthens the lining of the stomach as well. Considering all of these benefits, it’s also make it an amazing immune booster. Coconut Oil Coconut oil is anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal. It is rich in lauric acid and medium chain triglycerides. I aim to take at least 2 tbsps a day.…

My Response To The Collective Sigh Over “Paleo Diet”

This article is ridiculous for a few reasons, one being that archaeologists widely agree on what our ancestors ate, though diet DID vary from throughout regions; the Eskimo ate a shit ton of whale, the Massai ate a low of raw blood and milk, the Aborigines ate the stomachs of kangaroo, etc. “You simply do not see specific, trans-regional trends in human subsistence in the archaeological record. People can live off everything from whale blubber to seeds and grasses. You want to know what the ideal human diet consists of? Everything. Humans can and will eat everything, and we are remarkably successful not in spite of this fact, but because of it. Our adaptability is the hallmark of the human species. We’re not called omnivores for nothing.” Hoyes misses the mark here. Yeah, people can live off of anything, we see people living off of McDonald’s and Burger King and…

Gluten-Free Stuffing

Stuffing is probably my favorite side on Thanksgiving. Here is my gluten-free recipe, no one I’ve served it to has had any idea it’s not full of wheaty-death. Ingredients: 1 lb gluten-free bread (I don’t eat a ton of gf bread, but not is the perfect time to bust it out! I like this one) cut into cubes 6 tbsp butter, plus more for the top of the stuffing 1 large onion, diced 3 stalks celery, diced 2 garlic cloves, minced 3 tbsp dried sage 2 tbsp Trader Joe’s 21 Seasoning Salute (optional, but I love it) 2-3 cups chicken or turkey stock, preferably homemade salt and pepper Directions: Sauté the onionsand celery in butter. When it’s completely soft and the onions are translucent, add the garlic and sage and remove from heat. Add the 21 Seasoning Salute, if using. In a large bowl, toss the veggies with the bread. Pour one…

5 Ways To Bliss Out Your Space

When I was younger (and technically didn’t have anywhere to live) I thought that people who put money into decorating their homes were superficial and that the money could have been better spent. Now that I’m older and actually have a home, it is literally one of my favorite things to do. This is my home. It’s where you spend most of your time. It’s where you have family and friends over. It’s where you sleep and eat and live. That shit should be beautiful! Having a nice home directly impacts your mood. No one feels good living in a dirty, toxic environment. Your home should be full of positive energy, beauty and love. Here are five simple ways to bliss out your space. Bring The Outdoors Indoors Our ancestors spent most of their time in nature. Even one or two hundred years ago, our ancestors spent most of their time…

Are Your Candles KILLING You?

Okay, the title of this post is totally inflammatory. No, I don’t think your candles are going to kill you, although the title does make me envision one of those really shitty (but totally awesome) scary movies like Killer Clowns From Outerspace. It could be called Attack of the Killer Candles. I love me some candles. They provide gorgeous lighting, are so relaxing and they smell awesome. But several years ago I stopped using them. Whenever I lit a candle, my head would start to hurt and the inside of my nose would ache. I eventually found out why that is and have since switched to healthier options and ditched the paraffin candles. But first, what IS paraffin? Paraffin is derived from petroleum and is the waste result of refining crude oil into gasoline. Doesn’t sound so great, does it? The paraffin is then bleached using dioxin, a know human…

Paleo Pumpkin Pie

You guys this paleo pumpkin pie is just good. I dono’t even like pumpkin and I like this recipe.  Truth be told, I don’t love pumpkin pie. I know, the horror. Pumpkin Pie is an American classic, a Thanksgiving tradition, all of that. But I’d just much rather eat a vanilla cream pie, which is what I make for myself on Thanksgiving. Yes, I make pumpkin pie for all the pumpkin lovers and make a chocolate pie basically for myself. Just kidding. Sort of. But even I like this pumpkin pie. I like the creaminess from the coconut milk, I like that it doesn’t taste like a bucket of sugar was added and overall I like knowing that I’m not going to develop diabetes from eating it. Especially if I have more than one slice of Paleo Pumpkin Pie. Which, let’s be honest, I will. Why this Paleo Pumpkin Pie…

Raw Tuna Salad

I love tuna (especially if it’s rare or raw). If it’s on a menu, you can pretty much bet your boots I’m ordering it. So if I’m at a sushi restaurant, I literally order tuna 100% of the time. And as much as I love sushi, it’s not exactly a health food. Don’t get me wrong, fish is amazing for you and white rice is an easily digestible grain that provides glucose. But unless you’re at a great place, it’s likely farmed fish that’s covered in wheat-ified soy sauce and the sauces are usually made of vegetable oils. Not good. When tuna went on sale at my local Whole Foods, I jumped on the chance to recreate my favorite raw tuna salad. It was surprisingly good, even better than the restaurant I get it from. It was so simple to make and is definitely my new favorite…

Greek Rice

Apparently, it’s Greek week here at AN.   Yesterday I wrote about my neverending love of Greek food. This is actually the side dish I served with the lamb stew.   It. Was. Awesome.   If you digest rice well and are looking for an easily absorbable form of glucose, and want to make things that taste really, really good, you need to make this rice.   I love that it’s not only loaded with veggies, but also healthy fats from the bone broth and butter (which slows the absoption of glucose).
