I made this yesterday and honestly didn’t expect it to taste so awesome. Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t expect it to taste bad, it was just really effing good. Like, ridiculously delicious. I think the almond butter was an awesome addition. I don’t often cook with it, usually I just eat it raw. But it’s so creamy and delicious. I’m in love. Wellness Wednesdays: Essential Oils 101 – Intro Class For Newbies
It occurred to me that I’m regularly blabbing about essential oils when many of you likely don’t know much about them, their chemistry, their efficacy, or even what they are really. Essential oils are potent, plant based medicine. In this video I explain the basics of essential oils, how they work, why so they’re amazing and why you need them in your life. https://www.youtube.com/embed/dJKQV6lDdMU
Shrimp & Avocado Salsa
Today is Cinco de Mayo, and like any good Arrested Development fan, yesterday I celebrated Cinco de Cuatro. In doing so I made this Shrimp & Avocado Salsa. It’s easy to throw together and it’s a super nutrient dense meal. Because I’m planning on getting preggers soon, I like to make sure every meal I’m eating is loaded with vitamins, minerals and healthy fats. Avocado and olive oil cover the healthy fats, shrimp are a great source of protein and the tomatoes, onion and cilantro are just all around healthy foods. But truth be told, we’re going to celebrate Cinco de Mayo tonight at the Mexican restaurant on the corner of our street. They serve Coronaritas (if you don’t know – Google it) and lots of cheesy dishes. This is why my husband likes the place so much. My husband literally will eat a block of cheese like an apple.…
Paleo Tuna Salad
Scott loves tuna salad. With extra mayo. In fact I made a bunch of this earlier this week and he ate it on the way to work this morning. He likes to go to Whole Foods and buy it, and I think like a lot of people, he assumes that just because it’s from Whole Foods – it’s healthy. It isn’t. Store bought tuna salad is still full of rancid vegetable oils, GMOs, preservatives and sketchy ingredients. Making your own is cheaper and infinitely healthier. And in my opinion (aka the correct opinion), my recipe for paleo tuna salad taste better. Paleo Tuna Salad Making your own tuna salad is cheaper and infinitely healthier. Paleo General Tso’s Chicken
This Healthy General Tso’s Chicken recipe is a paleo and gluten-free spin on the Chinese restaurant classic! Perfect for dinner or as leftovers for lunch! Get your takeout fix with my healthy General Tso’s Chicken recipe! I looove Chinese food. But haven’t actually been to a Chinese restaurant or ordered Chinese food in over four years. Why? Well, I simply haven’t found a restaurant that doesn’t load their sauces with GMOs, rancid vegetable oils, high fructose corn syrup and MSG. And if I ate all those things in one sitting, my stomach might explode. And I’m just not up for it. So I make my own. One of my favorite Chinese restaurant takeout-fakeout recipes is this healthy General Tso’s Chicken! What is General Tso’s Chicken? One of the great things about living in America is American-Chinese cuisine! In particular, this finger-licking good sweet and spicy Chinese chicken dish called General Tso’s…
Smoothie Packs
Lately, I’ve been all about making smoothies. Don’t get me wrong – not the smoothies that contain a shit ton of sugar (even if it’s from fruit, three cups of fruit is way too much). Not low fat smoothies either. If you’re not consuming fat with your smoothies, you’re not absorbing the fat-soluble vitamins. I love a good smoothie. The smoothies I’m making are a great way to get extra veggies into your diet. They actually make an awesome snack. I add chlorella, bentonite and diatomaceous earth because I’m planning on getting knocked up in the not so distant future and these are extremely detoxifying. The chlorella removes mercury while the bentonite and diatomaceous earth remove harmful bacteria, yeast, and toxins. Lastly, I also add gelatin, because it’s awesome for the gut, your bones, skin, and cartilage. When I’m in the mood for a smoothie or just want a snack,…
Paleo Immersion Blender Mayonnaise
I’m one of those people that LOVE mayo. Back in the day when I’d actually eat mayo in restaurants, I’d always ask for extra. If I got a BLT, I wanted to bite into and have the mayo drip out. That kinda mayo lover. The sort of gross kind. But I’ve never found a fully healthy store bought mayo without GMOs or refined oils or oils that are super high in omega-6 fatty acids (which leads to inflammation – we want to avoid that). This mayo is full of healthy fats. Egg yolks are rich in vitamins and minerals (especially if you’re pregnant), coconut oil is rich in lauric acid and great for the gut (the expeller presser coconut oil has no coconut flavor), and olive oil is full of vitamin E, antioxidants and a great HDL booster. Even store bought “olive oil mayo” actually contains either soy or canola oils…
Paleo Blueberry Bread Pudding
I’ve really been craving blueberries lately. I got a bunch of bags of frozen bags of organic blueberries at Trader Joe’s and they’re surprisingly delicious. If I’m craving them, I automatically assume that means my body needs some specific nutrient found in blueberries. And who am I to deny what my body needs? So I made paleo blueberry bread pudding. I settled on bread pudding because I wanted something kind of cake-y and kind of bread-y. And because I suck at baking – it’s pretty difficult to f*ck up bread pudding. I mean, it’s just a blob of sweet, gooey bread. I topped mine with raw goat milk but you can use whatever you like. Ice cream would be awesome. Paleo Blueberry Bread Pudding This healthy paleo bread pudding with blueberries is kind of cake-y and kind of bread-y. You don’t need to be a good baker to whip up…
The Top Seven Ways To Boost HDL (The “Good” Cholesterol)
Let me get this out of the way first: cholesterol and heart disease are weakly linked. Cholesterol has been vilified, but the real villain is inflammation. Cholesterol is absolutely necessary for our health. Cholesterol is necessary for proper hormone function, cholesterol is necessary for vitamin D production, and roughly 25% of cholesterol is found in the brain, we need it for our brains to properly function. It is absolutely essential. So in writing this article, my aim isn’t to vilify cholesterol. I want to make this very clear. Cholesterol is great. But when HDL is low and LDL particle number is high, that can be an issue. Remember that when your cholesterol is tested, you want to be tested not just for basic HDL/LDL numbers, but for particle numbers. This is a much more accurate test of your cholesterol. A low LDL particle number is good, while it’s possible to have low…
