I was just creating my meal plan for next week (if you don’t do this, you should, here’s how) and realized I forgot to add smoothies to my list for last week. Which means I haven’t had any smoothies this week, which also means I didn’t as easily or readily get my daily nutrients in. Simply put, this is why I love smoothies. They pack a ton of nutrients into an easy to consume package. To be clear, I do not use them as a meal replacement. I have smoothies right along with my regular meals, and usually, consume one as a snack between lunch and dinner. Or if I’m being honest, sometimes for breakfast when I’m running really behind (it happens). I’ve been consuming a lot of smoothies lately because I just haven’t been into salads – which I normally love during the summer. But in DC, it’s been…
Canola Oil Is NOT Healthy
Few things get me as fired up as seeing companies, doctors and governmental organizations recommending canola oil (or just bad nutrition/health advice in general). Just today, an awesome reader emailed me to show me the response the company she was using as a meal replacement shake: This company told her that canola oil is one of the healthiest oils available because it contains both omega-3 and omega-6 and it’s the “best oil to do this.” Let me be clear: this is total bulls*t. This is something that people always say when I highlight the fact that canola oil is an industrialized, rancid oil. Company after company uses this oil for one reason – because it’s cheap. But they fool people who use and sell their products into thinking that this oil is healthy when in reality it’s anything but. And even worse, our own government recommends this oil over fats that are…
The Tea I’ve Been Drinking to Help Me Fall Asleep + Stay Asleep
I go in and out of having trouble sleeping. Sometimes I’ll sleep great for a few months, other times I’ll toss and turn for an hour, then regularly wake up throughout the night. When it’s really bad, I won’t be able to sleep at all for the entire night (thankfully that’s a rarity). I think this happens to a lot of people. I mean, who has great sleep all the time? Because of this and a few other factors in my life, I want to improve, I started working with an amazing herbalist, Carol Little. I’m prone to stress and anxiety, which definitely impacts how well I’m sleeping. I’m also deeply interested in herbs, herbal medicine and overall, the profound medicinal properties of herbs. My anxiety isn’t all-consuming (although it was a few months ago) but I am on a quest to always improve. That’s where Carol comes in. She’s so…
The One Food I’ve Given Up Since My Anxiety Has Improved
If you’ve followed me for a while, you may already know that at the beginning of this year, I was dealing with some pretty severe anxiety that seemed to come out of nowhere, for no reason. It was bad, you guys. I didn’t know what the hell was happening. Every day I literally felt either intense gurgling or nausea or a pit in my stomach. I felt deeply uncomfortable and on edge all day, then I would have full-blown panic attacks at night; particularly when I was trying to sleep. Which led to a lot of sleepless nights. Which made the anxiety worse. It was a vicious circle. Despite being stressed, I had no idea why this was happening to me. Up until this point, my anxiety was pretty well controlled. I’d dealt with stress before. Hell, I miscarried in September and still didn’t have anxiety anywhere near what I was…
Thai Pork Stir Fry
YOU GUYS. THIS THAI PORK STIR-FRY WAS SO GOOD. The other night I had a couple friends over for dinner, including my BFF, Jennifer. I don’t cook with pork a ton and I don’t know why, because it’s really delicious. I love this stir-fry. Truth be told, I used pork mixed with organs from my farmer. If you can find this, it will add a lot of nutrient density to the meal, but if not – no worries. I didn’t tell my dinner guests this prior to eating it. But I couldn’t keep it a secret. Back to the stir-fry. I couldn’t believe how well it turned out. It reminded me of takeout from a really good Thai restaurant, even though I’ve never had pork from a Thai restaurant. I used Thai inspired flavors and it really wasn’t hard at all to make this. It’s perfect for a quick, weeknight…
Shrimp Ceviche
The first time I had ceviche was on a remote beach in Mexico with Scott (then boyfriend, now husband). It was a tiny island called Holbox and I am seriously jonesing to go back. But for now, the closest I’m going to get is trying to recreate the ceviche I had on the beach that day. It was so flavorful, with fresh caught shrimp, mango, red onion and a whole bunch of cilantro. It was spicy from jalapeño, which I love but omitted from this recipe because Scott hates it. But if I were you, I’d definitely add a bunch of it! I love spicy food andjalapeño would make a beautiful addition. This recipe took me under fifteen minutes to make, and the shrimp I used were frozen! Such an easy, healthy, light meal. Paleo Cinnamon Roll Cookies
I am continually trying to create an awesome grain-free, sugar-free recipe for cinnamon rolls. I have the flavor down. I make the dough, I roll it out, I add the cinnamon and coconut sugar filling…and then I try to roll it up. This is where it always falls apart. It’s easy to roll out a gluten-filled dough for cinnamon rolls because the gluten acts as a binder. When it comes to grain-free baking, this aspect is tough because it just doesn’t hold together like gluten. So Im’ still working on a recipe for the dough, but in the meantime, I’m in love with these cookies. They taste exactly like a delicious cinnamon roll, just in cookie form. Because they’re cookies, they’re also way easier to make. This recipe makes about 16 cookies. Paleo Cinnamon Roll Cookies Paleo Cinnamon Roll Cookies are an easy to make and seriously deliciously gluten-free dessert!…
Best Ever Breakfast Potatoes
Every Sunday, I make a big batch of these breakfast potatoes to eat throughout the week. They taste amazing and they’re super healthy. You could use a white potato (don’t believe the hype that they’re horrible for you) but I usually use a white sweet potato. I also use a green pepper and an onion so this these breakfast potatoes are packed with veggies. Alternatively, you could bake them. Which is actually easier, but you have to check on the periodically and give them a toss to make sure they’re browning/cooking evenly. If you’d prefer to bake this, bake on 400 for about 20-30 minutes, turning the veggies every ten minutes or so. They are easy, taste amazing and they’re super healthy. 1 large white sweet potato (peeled…
How To Eat Healthy Without Breaking The Bank
I’m going to be very honest and say something that a lot of you probably will not like: THE “HEALTHY EATING IS TOO EXPENSIVE” EXCUSE IS TOTAL BS. Of course, there are exceptions. The people who are truly unable to afford healthy food because they’ve come on incredibly hard times. The single mom working two jobs and trying to pay for her children just to get by. The elderly man, unable to work. Of course there are times when this isn’t just an excuse. But let’s be realistic, most people choose not to purchase healthy food because they don’t prioritize it. People will spend $5 on a fancy drink from Starbucks, but will say $6 for a dozen organic and pastured eggs is too expensive. People will get their nails done, go out for beer with their buddies, go to happy hour with their girlfriends, get their hair done, pay for expensive…
The Healthiest Protein Powders
Because I’ve done several reviews of protein powders, meal replacement shakes and otherwise cheap, unhealthy and overly processed quick fixes, I’m often asked about which protein powders I recommend. Here are my reviews and the products I do not endorse: Isagenix Herbalife Plexus Shakeology BeachBody Arbonne Advocare It Works Usana Juice Plus To be clear, I do not recommend meal replacement shakes. Protein shakes are not meals, they are essentially just a supplement to your diet. They’re mainly a good option for post workout. They are not a good option in lieu of an actual meal. I’d also like to point out that my preference is real food post workout. I personally do not consume protein shakes daily and do not recommend them for everyone. However, I acknowledge that they can be helpful for those who are regularly performing strenuous workouts, trying to gain muscle or who just have trouble…
