Arugula, Tomato & Onion Sautéed Cod

Cod, along with rockfish (the state fish of Maryland) are my favorite white fishes. They are mild, tender and not overly fishy. Although I do love fishy-fish, most people don’t. My husband is one of those people. He hates fish that taste too fish, so cod has been an awesome option for him. The other great thing about cod is that it’s so versatile. Because it’s so mild, its flavors blend well with basically whatever the hell you want to make. And I had a bunch of arugula, tomato and onion from the farmers market, so this worked out perfectly. Also, I’ve been on a huge arugula kick lately. I used to HATE arugula. I thought it was really bitter and gross. Now I just love it. I read about the benefits of arugula, and it tuns out that it supposedly boost libido. I have to admit – I think…

Arugula, Romano & Bacon Oysters

I’m not sure at what point in my life I fell in love with oysters, but I assume it was when I was young because I can never remember disliking them. If you ask me what I like about ’em, I couldn’t really articulate it. I mean, let’s face the facts. They’re slimy, they kind of resemble vaginas, and they’re just weird. But, they taste amazing. And they’re amazing for you. Yep, oysters, my friends, are a superfood. Not a bullshit superfood like chia seeds. I’m talking real-deal, ancestral superfood. Oysters are loaded with zinc, which helps boost the immune system. You can get an entire day’s worth of zinc from one lil’ oyster. It also supports mental function and male virility. In addition, oysters also contain vitamins A and D. I don’t know where you’re from, but I live in DC where oysters are pretty easy to come by due…

Chipotle Maryland Crab Salad In Avocado Cups

Maryland crab isn’t like other kinds of crab. I find other crab chewy, grainy and not as sweet. Crab feasts here are common and pretty much the best thing ever. You hang out in someone’s backyard, lay down newspaper over a table, dump a jump of crabs on said table and feast. For hours. Most people usually set out butter and vinegar to dip the crabs in, and you always have a drink nearby. It’s amazing. I recently got my hands on some already picked crab. And wasn’t sure what to do with it. I wanted to make something that would highlight the awesomeness of the crab without overpowering it. But I also wanted something spicy and a bit creamy. This crab salad was all of those things and it turned out amazing. Like, so so good. Chipotle Maryland Crab Salad In Avocado Cups Chipotle Maryland Crab Salad In Avocado Cups…

Salmon Tartar

My fiancé, Scott, was a vegan for ten years. We are still trying to rectify the damage that was done to his body during this time. Even after we reintroduced foods like pastured eggs and grass-fed, raw cheese, his body still needed a lot of work. While he’s much healthier today, I still make it a point to feed him extremely nutrient dense food. And since he only started eating fish this past January, that means he eats a ton of seafood. Interestingly enough, he doesn’t like cooked salmon, but he’ll eat it raw. Weird, right? He goes from no animal products, to cheese lover, to raw fish eater. But I can’t blame him, because raw salmon is one of my favorite things to eat. Hellooo salmon sushi! I love it. Lucky for me, I sent him grocery shopping the other night and not only did he buy the most…

Spicy Mexican Shrimp

Simple food is the best food. There’s a Mexican restaurant in my neighborhood that’s really good. They are authentic, make most of their food from scratch, and are therefore a bit pricey. I always order their spicy Mexican shrimp, which burns my face off because it’s made with a habanero, but I don’t even care. I decided to recreate the recipe at home. There aren’t many ingredients, it took me actually less than 20 minutes to make the meal, and honestly I think my version was better due to the amount of butter I added. God I love butter. Spicy Mexican Shrimp This easy spicy Mexican shrimp tastes just like the fancy shrimp dish you can order at Mexican restaurants but is way cheaper and healthier made at home! Serve with rice or cauliflower rice. 3 tbsp butter2 cups wild shrimp1 onion (sliced)1-2 jalapenos (I of course used two,…

Spicy Cilantro Shrimp

I love Trader J’s. We don’t often go because there is only one in the entire city and I usually stick to my local organic market, but we went last Saturday and I was in heaven. If you are strapped for cash and generally want to save money while still eating organic, go to Trader Joe’s! We got a ton of stuff, including wine and food for guests for $100. If I had stuck to my grocery list, I would’ve spent even less than that. How does this have anything to do with shrimp? I was walking through the frozen section and spotted some really affordable and WILD shrimp. I never buy farmed, so I immediately threw it in my cart. That’s how this baby was born. Raw Tuna Salad

I love tuna (especially if it’s rare or raw). If it’s on a menu, you can pretty much bet your boots I’m ordering it. So if I’m at a sushi restaurant, I literally order tuna 100% of the time. And as much as I love sushi, it’s not exactly a health food. Don’t get me wrong, fish is amazing for you and white rice is an easily digestible grain that provides glucose. But unless you’re at a great place, it’s likely farmed fish that’s covered in wheat-ified soy sauce and the sauces are usually made of vegetable oils. Not good. When tuna went on sale at my local Whole Foods, I jumped on the chance to recreate my favorite raw tuna salad. It was surprisingly good, even better than the restaurant I get it from. It was so simple to make and is definitely my new favorite…

Roasted Salmon & Asparagus with Easy Cayenne Hollandaise

When I was younger my favorite breakfast was egg benedict (wait, it still is). Of course, I could only get it at restaurants, which means I probably had it all of two times as a kid, but I remember always being intimidated by hollandaise sauce. It was so fancy, and so French. How could anyone possibly recreate that creamy, delicious sauce? My grandmother couldn’t, none of my friends’ moms ever made hollandaise. I was pretty sure you had to be a classically trained (probably French) chef to do it. Turns out, it’s actually really easy. Especially if you have a food processor. The great part about this meal is that while I was making the hollandaise, I had salmon and asparagus roasting in the oven. I simply turned the oven to 400, and immediately added a piece of salmon and one bunch of asparagus. Let it cook for 15 minutes. You have a…

Fish Taco Salad

I recently wrote about my love for Mexican food, and for fish tacos in particular. It’s a strong love. After making such an amazing tasting Mexican slaw, I realized that fish would be perfect on top. I don’t eat tortillas anyway, so fish taco salad would be amazing. Plus I had leftover Mexican slaw.
