Are Burger King’s New “Satisfries” Actually Healthier?

Burger King has come out with a new fry recipe called Satisfries. It’s supposed to be healthier than the McDonald’s fries. They contain 40% less fat and 30% fewer calories. Is it actually better? No. The ingredients in the Satisfries are: Potatoes vegetable oil (contains one or more of these oils: canola, soybean, cottonseed, sunflower, corn) tapioca starch modified corn starch-modified paprika extract (color) rice flour salt sodium acid pyrophosphate (to maintain natural color) turmeric extract (color) xantham gum Now compare them to the regular fries: Not too different, huh? Not only do the Satisfries contain GMOs, they are deep fried in vegetable oils. These oils are extremely inflammatory. This means they wreak havoc on the body. They are very high in omega-6 fatty acids and very low in omega-3 fatty acids. Even small amounts of this oil distort omega 3 to 6 balance that is necessary to maintain a healthy body…

Fish Taco Salad

I recently wrote about my love for Mexican food, and for fish tacos in particular. It’s a strong love. After making such an amazing tasting Mexican slaw, I realized that fish would be perfect on top. I don’t eat tortillas anyway, so fish taco salad would be amazing. Plus I had leftover Mexican slaw. Mexican Chipotle Slaw

Scott and I are kind of addicted to Mexican food. He’s worse than I am though. At least a few times a month we’ll go to our favorite Mexican joint, El Centro (they also have organic red wine, what!). I always (literally, always) get the fish tacos. Normally fish tacos are mostly the breading and are deep fried in cheap, rancid vegetable oils (that will give you heart disease!). But El Centro’s fish tacos are grilled, then topped with a cabbage slaw, chipotle sauce, pico de gallo and avocado. It’s amazing. I ditch the corn tortilla and just eat it like a salad. While making my grocery lists and meal plans for the week, I realize I could totally recreate the slaw (or could I?). I never eat the tortilla anyway, and I could make my own version of this slaw, right? Right. The slaw (slaw is a weird word) turned out amazing. Even better…

GIVEAWAY: Hamilton Beach Blender!

This is the blender I had for years. It made me soup. It made me smoothies. It made me salsa. And it made me avocado margaritas (which are the shit). I’m not sure why something that’s really good is desribed as “the shit” since it’s so not appetizing, but I really had to emphasize how good avocado ‘ritas are. Just look at the things you can make with this bad boy: Here are some other things you can make: pesto slushie hollandaise nut butters almond milk cauliflower rice cauliflower mash hummus onion dips all kinds of dip banana ice cream 768,348 other things I haven’t yet thought of Here’s How To Enter Step 1 Click this link to check out the blender. Oatmeal Versus Eggs

I recently had a discussion with a coworker about the nutrient density of oatmeal versus eggs. According to her, oatmeal was filling, healthy, low in fat and much healthier than eggs. A lot of people think this. I was watching Parks and Rec the other day, and Anne ordered oatmeal and fruit instead of eggs because her character is so health conscious. As an aside, if you don’t want that show, you should probably start because it’s awesome. I decided to buy oatmeal (gluten-free of course) to perform an experiment. I rarely eat grains, and when I do it’s simple and easily digestible white rice. Then I soaked the oats overnight in raw milk and coconut milk, and I did this in a mini mason jar (which equated to about 1 cup of oats). I ate half for a morning snack and finished the rest the next day as an…

An Unbiased Review of Isagenix

Planning on starting the Isagenix diet? Read this unbiased Isagenix review, in which I take a close look at the Isagenix diet, its side effects and ingredients, and learn whether it’s a safe way to lose weight or just another fad diet. This Isagenix Review was UPDATED IN DECEMBER 2017 – and it’s even worse than I previously thought After my post on Herbalife and how unhealthy their products are, I got a lot of questions about Isagenix and whether I could write an Isagenix review. So here we go. Before it’s asked, this is the protein I use and recommend. I couldn’t find one good enough on the market, so I made my own. Grass-fed collagen with six organic superfoods: kale, spirulina, wheatgrass, broccoli, spinach and turmeric. I drink it in my daily smoothies and it gives me LIFE. Aka a healthy gut, glowing skin, strong digestion and energy…

Are Tattoos Toxic?

My boyfriend is pretty much covered in tattoos. I think sometimes people preemptively judge him (and others) for this. Apparently if you have tattoos you must also do the following: drink, smoke, go to jail and steal candy from small children. They don’t know that he is the nicest guy in the world, has a masters, has a great job in the music industry, literally never drinks and hasn’t smoked a cigarette in his life. That’s all well and good, and I love his tattoos; but recently I began wondering: what’s in the ink? I’m so concerned with what we put in our mouths and on our skin, that I never really considered what Scott has put in his skin. According to Scientific American, It is true that some red inks used for permanent tattoos contain mercury, while other reds may contain different heavy metals like cadmium or iron oxide.…

Caramel Shortbread Squares

Yesterday I was craving a sweet treat and came up with these. I love vanilla and caramel flavors so I stuck with those, but if you like chocolate, I definitely suggest sprinkling chocolate chips on top of this. This paired really nicely with Earl Grey tea, and they were super decadent. The Paleo SNAP Challenge Conclusion

I finished the Paleo Snap Challenge and I have to be honest, it wasn’t that difficult. Growing up I was raised by my grandmother and occasionally by my mostly absent mother. My grandmother’s income consisted of social security, which left little money for food; therefore I ate a lot of white bread and margarine sandwiches. By 16 I was living on my own and had hardly any money at all, much less to spend on food. I know what it’s like to be poor. I became really good at creating different meals from the same ingredients, which is something people do in jail, which I learned from a very sketchy roommate I once had. While the food this past week was repetitive and boring, it was nourishing, it kept me full and it did its job. I was unable to spend on luxury items that keep my body optimally functioning…
