An Ubiased Review of Monat

After my review of Rodan + Fields last month, I polled my readers and asked which company they would like me to review next. Monat won by a landslide. To be quite honest, I had never even heard of Monat. I had no idea what the company was or what they sold. This truly has allowed me to write an unbiased review of Monat. I actually had to figure out what Monat sold. Was it replacement shakes, like most of my reviews? Was it skincare? Neither – it’s haircare. I read about the company’s history and their culture and I like that they’re a family owned business. I don’t like that I’ve emailed the company numerous times asking for clarification of ingredients and have received no response. My immediate concerns were seeing fragrance on the ingredient list numerous times, as well as ingredients made with polyethylene glycol (PEGs). I also…

Beyond Meat Is Beyond Unhealthy

So, you think by buying a Beyond Meat Burger, you’re doing yourself and the environment a favor? Think twice. I took a look at the ingredients and here’s my honest review! You may have heard about that new Beyond Meat Burger. This new plant-based burger that tastes and even bleeds like a real burger. If that isn’t enough to weird you out, I don’t know what is. Weird as it seems to me, I’m much more concerned with the actual ingredients of this beyond meat burger. Especially when the product touts itself as not just healthy, but sustainable. Is Beyond Meat actually healthy? Is it actually sustainable? After taking a look at the ingredients, the answer is hell no. Not even close. Let’s examine. The original Beyond Meat burger: The Beast Burger: Grilled Chicken Strips: Beefy Crumble: There are many ingredients in these products that are both unhealthy and unsustainable. Soy…

The Healthiest Protein Powders

Because I’ve done several reviews of protein powders, meal replacement shakes and otherwise cheap, unhealthy and overly processed quick fixes, I’m often asked about which protein powders I recommend. Here are my reviews and the products I do not endorse: Isagenix Herbalife Plexus Shakeology BeachBody Arbonne Advocare It Works Usana Juice Plus To be clear, I do not recommend meal replacement shakes. Protein shakes are not meals, they are essentially just a supplement to your diet. They’re mainly a good option for post workout. They are not a good option in lieu of an actual meal. I’d also like to point out that my preference is real food post workout. I personally do not consume protein shakes daily and do not recommend them for everyone. However, I acknowledge that they can be helpful for those who are regularly performing strenuous workouts, trying to gain muscle or who just have trouble…

The Healthiest Protein Shake

I’ve written about Herbalife. I’ve also written about Isagenix. Ditto with Advocare. I get at least one email a day asking me to review a new protein/meal replacement shake, one that promises it’s all natural (which means nothing), one that promises it will finally give you the body you want, one that promises it’s the best protein source for your body. And without fail, every single one has been just another protein shake with fifty thousand ingredients that are meant to sit on your shelf for months at a time and not decompose. Ever heard the saying If it spoils, eat it. If it doesn’t, don’t? For the most part, that’s a pretty good rule of thumb. You know would happen if you left my version of protein shake in your cupboard for weeks or months? Nothin’ good. Because it’s from real food. Because it’s from fresh ingredients that the body…

How Vegetarianism Ruined My Health

When I was sixteen I started dating a vegan. He was older, lived on his own, was in a band and I thought he was so cool. The relationship lasted all of five minutes, but he left me with something I would hold onto for the next five years: vegetarianism. It was sort of the perfect storm that led me to become a vegetarian. My mother had always told me I had the body that was “prone to getting fat”, I was compassionate and then introduced to the horrors of factory farming, I was sort of hippie-ish by nature and didn’t want to destroy the environment or kill anything, I wanted to be healthy and have clear skin, and I thought going vegetarian was my answer. How had I not seen it sooner? Of course, the answer to life’s problems was eschewing meat! I didn’t want any part of factory…

Top 10 GM Foods

1. Soy 2. Corn 3. Canola 4. Sugar Beets 5. Dairy from CAFO cows 6. Zucchini and summer squash 7. Cotton 8. Alfalfa 9. Papaya 10. Aspartame Genetically modified foods are dangerous, and they sure as hell scare the crap out of me both from a health and environmental perspective. Not just due to the toxic effects, but the corporation behind genetic modification: Monsanto. Monsanto got its start in 1901 producing the artificial sweetener saccharin. Since then, Monsanto has developed and distributed numerous carcinogens including PCBs, DDT, Agent Orange and Roundup, all of which are now banned, excluding Roundup (though it should be). In 1994 Monsanto received approval for Posilac, a growth hormone for dairy cows (growth hormones in cows have been linked to cancer). Monsanto went on to create genetically modified seeds and are now the largest producer of GM seeds, cornering 90% of the market. Are GMOs Safe? I am…
