Top Five Tips For Anxiety

I’ve had anxiety for as far back as I can remember. Which is about since I was 4-5 years-old. To “manage anxiety” was not a concept I would understand for a long time. It worsened when I graduated high school, and feelings of terror would overcome me for seemingly no specific reason. Then it got even worse when I was around 21. This was when my anxiety wasn’t just a feeling of sheer terror, it was also a deep-seated feeling of absolute dread and hopelessness. When I felt a panic attack coming on, which about 10-20 times a day, it was like falling down a dark, terrifying, desolate black hole. And I’d live there for a bit until I could pull myself out. And then the process would repeat. I thought I was losing my mind. When I was in the midst of dealing with severe anxiety and I saw…

Three Day Preconception Meal Plan

Yesterday, I found myself searching for meal plans that nutritionists, bloggers, medical organizations and doctors shared for pregnant women and women trying to become pregnant. For whatever reason, I love seeing meal plans and getting an idea of what others are eating. Unfortunately, for the most part the meal plans were pretty terrible. They recommended oatmeal instead of eggs because of the fat content (um yeah, the omega-3s along with choline and vitamins A, E, D and K are kind of the point of eating eggs during pregnancy!), low-fat dairy products and a ton of fiber from “healthy whole grains.” Overall, the plans were very low in fat which is exactly the food a woman needs for optimal fertility. In fact, a study from Harvard found that women who ate two or more servings of low-fat dairy per day had an 85% higher risk of infertility than women who ate…

Eat This One Food Daily To Improve Acne, Anxiety and Allergies

Back in the day, I had the worst acne along with anxiety so severe I thought I’d go nuts. Let me tell you what’s not fun: having a face full of painful, deep, cystic acne. Along with a constant feeling of dread and terror. I tried everything for both, topical creams, prescriptions, expensive “cures” and even Accutane for my acne, meditating and Xanax and Klonopin for my anxiety. Nothing worked for either of them. Luckily, I’ve never had allergies but it’s likely that I would have developed them had I not drastically changed my diet. By now you might be wondering what these three things have in common. What can you do to improve all three of these issues? Start eating fermented food. Stop eating unhealthy, inflammatory foods that are damaging to the gut. Growing up, I subsisted on a diet of white bread, white sugar, and margarine. Sugar bread was a…

How I’m Preparing For Pregnancy AKA My Preconception Diet

True story: to freak me out and annoy me, my husband used to awkwardly rub my belly and in a disgustingly creepy voice whisper to me, “I’m gonna put a baby in there.” It was the worst. But now we’re actually planning on getting knocked up in 2015. I’ve talked a lot about preconception diets, how important they are, how I plan on doing one before I get preggo, etc.  Actually, we both are doing a preconception diet. Don’t forget that dudes need to do this too! It’s just as important for the husband to take steps to detoxify as well as nourish himself to be able to make a healthy baby. It takes two to tango ya’ll, in more ways than one. Why You Need To Do A Preconception Diet When Dr. Price traveled the world studying indigenous cultures, he discovered that they prepared for pregnancy from three months…

The Benefits of Fermented Food

Fermentation is an ancient method to preserve food. The earliest fermented food dates back to 6000 BC and virtually every culture has their own version of fermented food. The Koreans have kimchi, the Germans have sauerkraut, and us Russians have kefir. Other examples include wine, cheese, yogurt, cortido, pickles and kombucha. Fermented foods are food that have allowed the natural bacteria to feed on the sugar and starch in a food to create lactic acid. This creates different strains of powerful probiotics, enzymes, B vitamins and even omega-3s. Fermenting food also preserves it, I’ve kept my fermented salsa in the fridge for up to six months (although it usually doesn’t last that long before I eat it)! I used to be SO intimidated by fermenting my own food. I knew it was an amazing addition to a healthy diet, but stuck to store and farm bought ferments. What if I…

How To Kick A Cold Before It Forms

Last week I felt that familiar tickle in the back of my throat. What is this again? I thought. Oh yeah, a virus. A cold. Something making my throat hurt. It’s been such a long time since I’ve even had a cold I had to rack my brain to remember what the feeling was. I definitely remembered it as I woke up in the middle of the night when that tickle had transformed into a full-on scratch. My throat felt like sandpaper every time I swallowed. And WHY can you not STOP swallowing when your throat hurts? It’s like you do it just to double-check that that shit still hurts. Swallow. Ouch. Swallow again. Still ouch. So that was how I spent my night. Not ideal considering how crucial sleep is to the immune system. When I finally got up the next morning, I knew I had to whip out…

25 Paleo Breakfast Ideas With Egg-Free Options!

I often get asked what I eat for breakfast or if I have any advice on diversifying someone’s breakfast menu. The truth is, I almost always eat eggs for breakfast. I tried yogurt and berries recently but it didn’t fill me up (though it might fill you up). I find that people usually think fruit, nuts or a low-fat smoothie is an acceptable breakfast option. WRONG. You want breakfast to be full of fat and protein to keep you full and keep your energy up. And if you workout in the mornings or have a strenuous job, you should probably incorporate some healthy carbs into your breakfast equation. So here are some breakfast ideas, some of which were gifted to me from my amazing Facebook community (they’re the best). There are also several egg-free options, though I will never understand how anyone who isn’t allergic to eggs would ever give…

Guest Post: The Importance of Fermented Food

Ancient Fermentation + Healing the Digestive System It’s not uncommon to experience uncomfortable symptoms of digestive distress in this day and age. After all, years of gorging on convenience and processed food rather than indulging in fresh, whole foods will wreak havoc on the gut after many years, if not immediately upon consumption. So many of us have lost touch over time with our bodies and within that, we have lost touch with knowing what foods heal us. The good news is that this is changing rapidly as more and more people are bringing awareness to their plates and opting for a diet loaded with whole foods. We have the power within us to heal ourselves and it’s actually a very simple solution. It all starts with what you choose to put into your body, not just to fuel it, but to nourish it as well. It’s not likely that…

Five Ways To Heal A UTI Without Antibiotics

A urinary tract infection occurs when harmful germs enter the urethra. The germs travel up the urethra and into the bladder, causing an infection. If left untreated the infection can travel to the kidneys, causing serious damage. UTIs are incredibly common and are not fun. They can cause intense pain and discomfort. If you go to your doctor suffering from a UTI, they’ll undoubtedly hand you a prescription for antibiotics. The problem with this is that antibiotics are not selective in the bacteria they destroy, which means they kill both the bad and good bacteria. It can take years for your body to recover from antibiotics and rebuild beneficial gut flora. A lack of this good gut flora leads to even more susceptibility to infection, mood disorders and a suppressed immune system. Not to mention the fact that the overprescription of antibiotics is causing bacteria to mutate and create superbugs.…

Five Steps To Heal The Gut

All disease begins in the gut. -Hippocrates Whether you have acne, a dairy allergy or get chronic yeast infections, these are all symptoms of a damaged digestive system. And it’s not just allergies or infections that are indicative of a damaged gut; IBS, constipation, reflux, heartburn, etc. are all indications. And considering more than 100 million Americans suffer from digestive upset, there’s a whole lot of gut healing that needs to happen. Think of your gut as a barrier. When that barrier becomes damaged, or leaky, undigested food particles enter the bloodstream which causes allergies, inflammation, acne, arthritis, eczema, depression, constipation, IBS, anxiety and even, if left untreated, a more serious disease like cancer and schizophrenia. You’ve probably heard the 90% of the immune system is in the gut, but if your gut is damaged, your defenses are down, leaving you more susceptible to viruses, bacteria, pathogens and the basic…
